Shift Lever Positions
SHIFT LEVER
The shift lever has six positions. It
must be in Park or Neutral to start
the engine. When you are stopped in
D, 2, 1, N or R, press firmly on the
brake pedal, and keep your foot off
the accelerator pedal.
To shift from:
Do this:
P to R
Press the brake pedal, then
move the shift lever.
R to N
N to D
D to 2
2 to 1
1 to 2
Move the lever.
2 to D
D to N
N to R
R to P
You cannot shift out of Park with the
brake pedal depressed when the
ignition switch is in LOCK (0) or
ACCESSORY (I).
Automatic Transmission
Park (P)
This position mechani-
cally locks the transmission. Use
Park whenever you are turning off or
starting the engine. To shift out of
Park, you must press on the brake
pedal and have your foot off the
accelerator pedal. Move the shift
lever to the left and down to shift out
of the Park positon.
