TAKING CARE OF UNEXPECTED
PROBLEMS

ENGINE WILL NOT START

Possible Cause
Fuel valve is OFF
Throttle lever is in the wrong position
Out of fuel
Bad fuel; mower was stored without treating or
draining gasoline, or refueled with bad gasoline
Spark plug is faulty, fouled, or improperly
gapped
Spark plug is wet with fuel (flooded engine)
Fuel filter is clogged, carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction, valves stuck, etc.

LOSS OF POWER

Possible Cause
Throttle is not set to FAST
Grass is too tall to cut
Mower deck is clogged
Air filter is clogged
Bad fuel; mower stored without treating or
draining gasoline, or refueled with bad gasoline
Fuel filter is clogged, carburetor malfunction,
ignition malfunction, valves stuck, etc.

Correction
Turn the fuel valve ON (page 8)
Move the throttle lever to the CHOKE
position, unless the engine is warm
(page 15)
Refuel (page 35)
Drain the fuel tank and carburetor (page 39)
Refuel with fresh gasoline (page 35)
Gap or replace the spark plug (page 32)
Dry and reinstall the spark plug. Start the
engine with throttle lever in the FAST
position.
Take the mower to an authorized Honda
servicing dealer for repair
Correction
Move the throttle to FAST (page 16)
Raise the cutting height (page 10), cut a
narrower swath (page 20), use a slower
ground speed, or cut more frequently
Clean out the mower deck
Clean or replace the air filter (page 31)
Drain the fuel tank and carburetor (page 39)
Refuel with fresh gasoline (page 35)
Take the mower to an authorized Honda
servicing dealer for repair
