    Instrument Cluster WARNING LIGHTS AND CHIMES Standard instrument cluster shown, optional cluster similar Warning lights and gauges can alert you to a vehicle condition that may become serious enough to cause extensive repairs. A warning light may illuminate when a problem exists with one of your vehicle’s functions. Many lights will illuminate when you start your vehicle to make sure the bulbs work.
  • Page 13 Instrument Cluster Solid illumination after the engine is started indicates the On Board Diagnostics System (OBD-II) has detected a malfunction. Refer to On board diagnostics (OBD-II) in the Maintenance and Specifications chapter. If the light is blinking, engine misfire is occurring which could damage your catalytic converter.
  • Page 14 Instrument Cluster Airbag readiness: If this light fails to illuminate when the ignition is turned to on, continues to flash or remains on, have the system serviced immediately by your authorized dealer. A chime will sound when there is a malfunction in the indicator light. Safety belt: Reminds you to fasten your safety belt.

    Instrument Cluster Key-in-ignition warning chime: Sounds when the key is left in the ignition in the off or accessory position and the driver’s door is opened. Headlamps on warning chime: Sounds when the headlamps or parking lamps are on, the ignition is off (the key is not in the ignition) and the driver’s door is opened.

Fuel gauge: Indicates approximately how much fuel is left in the fuel tank (when the ignition is in the on position). The fuel gauge may vary slightly when the vehicle is in motion or on a grade.

    Instrument Cluster MESSAGE CENTER Your vehicle’s message center allows you to configure/personalize certain vehicle options to suit your needs. The message center is also capable of monitoring many vehicle systems and will alert you to potential vehicle problems and various conditions with an informational message followed by a long indicator chime.

  • Page 21 Instrument Cluster System check and vehicle feature customization Press the SETUP button repeatedly to cycle the message center through the following features: RESET FOR SYSTEM CHECK When this message appears, press RESET and the message center will begin to cycle through the following systems and provide a status of the item if needed.
  • Page 22 Instrument Cluster 3. Once “OIL LIFE SET TO XXX%” is displayed, release and press the RESET button to change the Oil Life Start Value. Each release and press will reduce the value by 10%. Note: Oil life start value of 100% equals 7,500 miles (12,000 km) or 12 months.

The heads up display and/or chime will activate briefly to confirm the last setting. COLLISION WARN SYSTEM (if equipped) This feature warns the driver of a possible collision.

The auxiliary input jack provides a way to connect your portable music player to the in-vehicle audio system. This allows the audio from a LINE IN portable music player to be played through the vehicle speakers with high fidelity.

This feature allows you to plug in media playing devices, memory sticks, and also to charge devices if they support this feature.   • Page 44 CD units are designed to play commercially pressed 4.75 in (12 cm) audio compact discs only. Due to technical incompatibility, certain recordable and re-recordable compact discs may not function correctly when used in Ford CD players. Do not use any irregular shaped CDs or discs with a scratch protection film attached.
  • Page 45 Entertainment Systems CDs with homemade paper (adhesive) labels should not be inserted into the CD player as the label may peel and cause the CD to become jammed. It is recommended that homemade CDs be identified with permanent felt tip marker rather than adhesive labels.

    Climate Controls MANUAL HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM (IF EQUIPPED) Temperature conversion: To switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius, refer to Message center in the Instrument Cluster chapter. Defrost: Distributes outside air through the windshield defroster vents and de-mister vents. Can be used to clear the windshield of fog and thin ice.
  • Page 51 Climate Controls 4. A/C: Press to activate/deactivate air conditioning. Use with recirculated air to improve cooling performance and efficiency. A/C engages automatically in MAX A/C, (defrost) (floor/defrost). Recirculated air: Press to activate/deactivate air recirculation in the vehicle. Recirculated air may reduce the amount of time needed to cool down the interior of the vehicle and may also help reduce undesired odors from reaching the interior of the vehicle.

    Lights HEADLAMP CONTROL Turns the lamps off. Turns on the parking lamps, instrument panel lamps, license plate lamps and tail lamps. Turns the low beam headlamps Autolamp control (if equipped) The autolamp system provides light sensitive automatic on-off control of the exterior lights normally controlled by the headlamp control.
  • Page 62 Lights 4. Turn the headlamp control to the autolamp position. The headlamps will turn on. 5. Wait the desired amount of time for the exit delay you want (up to three minutes), then turn the headlamps off. High beams Push the lever toward the instrument panel to activate.
  • Page 63 Lights Scenario 3: Conditions - The automatic high beam system is set to ON in the message center. The headlamp switch is in (off), (park lamps), (on). Operation - The high beam switch can be used to turn the high beams on and off.

Note: Activating the multi-function lever will put the headlamps in manual high beam mode (constant or flash-to-pass) until the lever is returned to the neutral position. To manually override the auto high beam and go to low beam, the headlamp control must be taken out of (autolamp) position.
  • Page 65 Lights For significant blockages (e.g. bird dropping, bug splatter, snow, or ice), the automatic high beam system uses a blocked sensor computer program. If a blockage is detected and no changes are observed, the system will go into low beam mode until the blockage is cleared. If blockages are repeatedly detected, the system will stay in low beam mode for the remainder of the ignition cycle unless the system is able to begin detecting other vehicles again.

    Lights Ambient lighting (if equipped) Illuminates footwells and cupholders with a choice of several colors. The ambient lighting control is located in the center console storage area. To activate, press and release the left side of the control to cycle through the color choices plus the off state.
  • Page 70 Lights Using the right bulbs Replacement bulbs are specified in the chart below. Headlamp bulbs must be marked with an authorized “D.O.T.” for North America and an “E” for Europe to ensure lamp performance, light brightness and pattern and safe visibility. The correct bulbs will not damage the lamp assembly or void the lamp assembly warranty and will provide quality bulb burn time.
  • Page 71 Lights Replacing headlamp (low/high beam) bulbs 1. Make sure the headlamp switch is in the off position, then open the hood. 2. Reach in behind the headlamp assembly to access the bulbs and connectors. 3. Remove the outboard rubber boot from the lamp assembly by pulling rearward.
  • Page 72 Lights 3. Remove the bulb socket by turning it counterclockwise and pulling it straight out. 4. To remove the bulb, pull it straight out of the bulb socket. Install the new bulb(s) in reverse order. Replacing rear brake/tail/turn and side marker lamp bulbs The brake/tail/turn and side marker lamp bulbs are located in the tail lamp assembly.

  • Page 77 Driver Controls TILT/TELESCOPE STEERING WHEEL To adjust the steering wheel: 1. Pull the lever down to unlock the steering column. 2. While the lever is in the down position, move the steering wheel up or down and in or out until you find the desired position.

    Maintenance and Specifications ENGINE COOLANT Checking engine coolant The concentration and level of engine coolant should be checked at the intervals listed in scheduled maintenance information. The coolant concentration should be maintained at 50/50 coolant and distilled water, which equates to a freeze point of -34°F (-36°C). Coolant concentration testing is possible with a hydrometer or antifreeze tester.

Adding engine coolant When adding coolant, make sure it is a 50/50 mixture of engine coolant and distilled water.

For vehicles with overflow coolant systems with a non-pressurized cap on the coolant recovery system, add coolant to the coolant recovery reservoir when the engine is cool.

Vehicles driven year-round in non-extreme climates should use a 50/50 mixture of engine coolant and distilled water for optimum cooling system and engine protection.

Operate the vehicle in fail-safe mode only as long as necessary to bring the vehicle to rest in a safe location and seek immediate repairs.

WARNING: Gasoline may contain benzene, which is a cancer-causing agent. Observe the following guidelines when handling automotive fuel: • Extinguish all smoking materials and any open flames before refueling your vehicle.

Fuel vapor is extremely hazardous under certain conditions. Care should be taken to avoid inhaling excess fumes. WARNING: The flow of fuel through a fuel pump nozzle can produce static electricity, which can cause a fire if fuel is pumped into an ungrounded fuel container.

This allows you to simply open the fuel filler door and insert the fuel filler nozzle into the fuel system. The Easy Fuel™ system is self-sealing and protected against dust, dirt, water and snow/ice.

If you hear a hissing sound near the fuel filler door (Easy Fuel™ “no cap” fuel system), do not refuel until the sound stops. Otherwise, fuel may spray out, which could cause serious personal injury. Choosing the right fuel Use only UNLEADED fuel or UNLEADED fuel blended with a maximum of 10% ethanol.

Cleaner air Ford endorses the use of reformulated “cleaner-burning” gasolines to improve air quality, per the recommendations in the Choosing the right fuel section. Running out of fuel Avoid running out of fuel because this situation may have an adverse effect on powertrain components.

These temporary malfunctions can be corrected by filling the fuel tank with good quality fuel, properly closing the fuel fill inlet or letting the electrical system dry out.

If the vehicle is not ready for I/M testing, the following driving cycle consisting of mixed city and highway driving may be performed: 15 minutes of steady driving on an expressway/highway followed by 20 minutes of stop-and-go driving with at least four 30-second idle periods.
