Troubleshooting

• The tape drive has not been recognized
a) The supplied backup software has not been installed (See page 10) .
b) The USB cable has not been plugged in completely (See page 12) .
c) A non-shielded (low-speed type) USB cable or extension USB cable is being
used.
d) If you start the backup software before connecting to your computer.
Once quit the backup software, then connect this unit to your computer before
starting the backup software.
• It is not possible to carry out a backup
a) The tape cartridge is write-protected. In this case, slide the tab to the left
[unlocked position]. (See page 14) .
b) You might be using a TR-3 or different type of tape cartridge. Only a TR-4
tape cartridge can be used for this unit.
• An 8 GB backup is not possible on a TR-4
a) The basic capacity of a TR-4 is 4 GB. The figure of 8 GB assumes software
data compression at a ratio of 2:1. The compression ratio depends on the data
concerned , so a capacity of 8 GB may not always be attainable.
b) The sofware data compression may not work. Check the check mark
in the "Data compression (in software)" check box on Backup Options.
• An error message occurs during compare or restore operation
a) The read/write head may be dirty. For head cleaning, always follow the
instructions in "Cleaning the Read/Write Head" in this manual (See page 16) .
b) Use the "Media Handling Preference" provided as part of the backup software
to retension the tape.
1 Click on the Special tab on the Retrospect Directory window (See page 17) .
2 Click on the Preferences button. The preferences window will appear.
3 Select "Media Handling" in the list of preferences category.
4 Check the Retension Tapes check box.
c) If neither of these measures eliminates the problem, try using a new tape
cartridge.
