Chapter 7 Server Linkage Functions
7.2 VMware Linkage
VMware VASA
vStorage API for Storage Awareness (VASA) is an API that enables vCenter Server to link with the
storage system and obtain storage system information.
ETERNUS VASA Provider is required to use the VASA function.
ETERNUS VASA Provider obtains and monitors information from the ETERNUS DX Disk storage
system by using functions of ETERNUS SF Storage Cruiser (paid software).
Profile-Driven Storage
This feature classifies volumes according to the service level in order to allocate virtual machines
with the most suitable volumes.
Storage Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS)
This feature moves original data in virtual machines to the most suitable storage area according
to the access volume. Storage DRS balances the loads on multiple physical servers in order to
eliminate the need for performance management on each virtual machine.
VMware VAAI
vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI) are APIs that improve system performance and
scalability by using the storage system resources more effectively. VAAI enhances the integration
of the storage virtual infrastructure, the Distributed Resource Scheduling (DRS) function, and the
troubleshooting features for the storage system with VMware.
An appropriate ETERNUS VAAI Plug-in for the environment is required to use the VAAI function.
The ETERNUS DX Disk storage system supports the following features.
Full Copy (XCOPY)
This feature allows copying processes to be performed only in the ETERNUS Disk storage
system without the use of a server. Full Copy reduces the loads on servers and improves system
performance.
Block Zeroing
When allocating storage areas to create new virtual machines, it is necessary to zero out these
storage areas for the initialization process. Previously, this process was performed on the server
side. Performing this process on the storage system side instead reduces the loads on servers
and speeds up the allocation of capacity for virtual machines.
Hardware Assisted Locking
This feature enables block level control of the ETERNUS DX Disk storage system for exclusion
control in specific storage areas. This substitutes the LUN (logical volume) level control that is
implemented in "VMware vSphere". Hardware Assisted Locking minimizes the storage areas that
are to be limited for access by exclusion control and improves the operational efficiency of virtual
machines.
VMware vCenter Server
The performance information of the ETERNUS DX Disk storage system can be displayed on the
vSphere Client screen by expanding the user interface of vSphere Client.
ETERNUS vCenter Plug-in is required to use this function.
