Starting Engine

ARNING:Besure no one otherthan
the operatoris standingnear the lawn
mower whilestartingengineor operat-
ing mower. Neverrun engine indoorsor
in enclosed,poorlyventilatedareas. Engineexhaust
containscarbon monoxide, a n odorlessand deadly
gas. Keephands, feet, hairand looseclothingaway
from any movingparts on engineand lawn mower.
Followthe set of instructionspertainingto your unit.
Refer to enginemanualfor helpwith the engine.
Honda Engine:
1. Placethe fuel valveleverfoundon the left sideof the
engine intothe ON (OPEN)position.
2. Movethechoke lever(if equipped)all the way
backwardintothe choke position.See Figure4-2.
3. Standingbehindthe mower,squeezethe bladecontrol
againstupper handleas shownin Figure4-2. The
chokewill nowbeginto slowlyreturnto the off choke
positionafter activatingthe blade control.Therefore,
quicklymoveonto stepfour below.
4. Holdingthesetwo handlestogetherfirmly,grasp recoil
starterhandleand pull ropeout with a rapid,continu-
ous, full arm stroke.Keepinga firm grip on the starter
handle letthe roperewindslowly.Repeatuntil engine
cranks. Letthe rope rewindeachtime slowly.
Briggs
& Stratton:
1. If equipped,pushprimerthreetimes.Wait about
two secondsbetweeneach push.See Figure4-3. In
temperaturearound550F or below,primefive times.
Donot primeto restarta warmengine.
2. Standingbehindthe mower,squeezethe bladecontrol
againstupper handleas shownin Figure4-3.
3. Holdingthesetwo handlestogetherfirmly,grasp recoil
starterhandleand pull ropeout with a rapid,continu-
ous, full arm stroke.Keepinga firm grip on the starter
handle,let the rope rewindslowly.Repeatuntil engine
cranks. Letthe rope rewindeachtime slowly.

WARNING:Wait for the blade to stop
completelybefore performing any work
on the mower or to remove the grass
catcher.

ARNING:If you strike a foreign
object, stop the engine.Remove
wire from the spark plug,thoroughly
inspectmower for any damage, and
repairdamage before restarting and operating.
Extensive vibration of mower during operation is an
indicationof damage. The unit should be promptly
inspectedand repaired.
Stopping
Engine
1. Releasebladecontrol to stop theengineand blade.
2. Disconnectsparkplug wirefrom spark plug and
groundagainstthe engine.
UsingYour
Lawn Mower
Be surelawnis clearof stones,sticks,wire,or other
objectswhich coulddamagelawnmoweror engine.
Such objectscouldbe accidentlythrownby the mower
in anydirectionand cause seriouspersonalinjuryto the
operatorand others.
Using as Mulcher
Formulchinggrass,removethe grasscatcherand side
dischargechutefrom the mower.Foreffectivemulching,
do notcut wet grass.If the grass hasbeen allowedto
growin excessof fourinches,mulchingisnot recom-
mended.Usethe grass catcherto bag clippingsinstead.
Using
Grass Catcher
Youcan usethe grass catcherto collectclippingswhile
youare operatingthe mower.Referto setup sectionfor
instructionson attachingthe grasscatcher.

The operation of any
lawn mower can re-
suit in foreign objects
being thrown into
the eyes, which can

safety glasses while
operating the mower,
or while performing
any adjustments or
repairs on it.

mower while starting
engine or operating
mower. Never run
engine indoors or in
enclosed, poorly ven-
tilated areas. Engine

gas. Keep hands,
feet, hair and loose
clothing away from
any moving parts
on engine and lawn
mower.
