This water heater must not be installed directlyon carpeting.
Carpeting must be protected by a metal or wood panel
beneath the applianceextendingbeyondthe full width and
depth of the appliance by at least 3 inches(76.2mm) in any
direction,or if the appliance isinstalledin an alcove or closet,
the entire floor must be coveredby the panel.Failureto heed
this warningmay result in a fire hazard.

VENT DAMPERS - Any vent damper,whether it is operated
thermally or otherwise mustbe removed if itsuseinhibits prep-
er draftingofthe water heater.
Thermally Operated Vent Dampers:Gas-firedwater heaters
havingthermal efficiency in excess of 80%may producea rela-
tively lowflue gastemperature.Suchtemperaturesmaynot be
high enough to properly open thermally operated vent
damper_ Thiswouldcausespillage of fluegases and may cause
carbonmonoxidepoisoning.
Ventdampersmustbear evidence of certification as complying
with the latest edition of American NationalStandardANSI
Z2h68 (ANSI Z2h66 & 67, respectively,cover electrically and
mechanically a ctuatedvent dampers).Beforeinstallation of any
ventdamper,consult yourlocalSearsServiceCenteror the gas
utilityfor further information.

• The appliance and its individual s hutoffvalvemustbe discon-
nected from the gassupply pipingsystemduringanypressure
testing of the gas system at test pressures in excessof '/2
poundper squareinch(3.5kPa).
• The appliance mustbe isolated from the gassupply pipingsys-
tem by closingits individual m anualshutoffvalveduringany
pressure testingof the gassupply pipingsystemat test pres-
sures equalor less than _ poundper squareinch(3.5kPa).

BEFORELIGHTING PROPANE(LR) GAS WATER HEATERS:
Propane(I-R) gasisheavierthan air. Shouldthere be a leakin
the system,the gas will settle near the ground.Basements,
crawl spaces, s kirted areas under mobile homes (even when
ventilated),closets and areasbelowgroundlevelwill serveas
pocketsfor the accumulation of this gas.Beforeattemptingto
light or relight the water heater'spilot or turningon a nearby
electricallightswitch,be absolutely sure there isno accumulat-
ed gasin the area. Searchfor odor of gasby miffing at ground
level in the vicinityof the appliance. I f odor isdetected,follow
steps indicatedat "For Your Safety"on the coverpageof this
manualthen leave the premises.

Chemical vapor corrosionof the flue and vent system may
occurif air for combustioncontains certain chemicalvapors.
Spraycan propellants,cleaningsolvents,refrigerator and air
conditioner refrigerants, swimming pool chemicals,calcium

typicalcompounds whichare potentially corrosive.
