Rules
Safe Operation Practices for Ride-On Mowers
IMPORTANT: THIS CU'I-FINGMACHINE IS CAPABLEOF AMPUTATINGHANDS AND FEET ANDTHROWING OBJECTS. FAILURE
TO OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULTIN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
I. Training
Reedtheinstructionscarefully. Befamiliarwiththecontrols
and the properuseof the equipment.
Neverallow children or peopleunfamiliar w iththeinstruc.
tionsto usethelawnmower.Localregulations may restrict
the age of the operator.
Never mowwhilepeople,especiallychildren,or petsare
nearby.
Keep in mindthat the operatoror user is responsible for
accidentsor hazards occurring to other people or their
property.
Do notcarry passengers.
Alldriversshouldseek and obtainprofessional and prac-
tical instruction.Such instruction shouldemphasize:
- the need for care and concentration when working
with ride-onmachines;
- controlof a ride-onmachinesliding on a slopewill
not be regainedbythe application of the brake.
The main reasonsfor loss of controlare:
a) insufficient w heel grip;
b) being driventoo fast;
c) inadequatebraking;
d) the type of machineis unsuitable for itstask;
e) lack of awareness of the effect of ground
conditions,especially s lopes;
f) incorrecthitching and loaddistribution.
ll.Preparation
Whilemowing,alwayswearsubstantial footwear andlong
trousers. Do not operate the equipmentwhen barefoot
or wearing opensandals.
Thoroughlyinspectthe area where the equipmentis to
be usedand removeall objectswhichmay bethrownby
the machine.
WARNING - Petrolis highlyflammable.
- Storefual in containers specificallydesignedfor this
purpose.
Refuel outdoorsonlyand do not smokewhile refu-
eling.
- Add fuel beforestartingthe engine. Never remove
thecap ofthe fuel tankor add petrolwhiletheengine
is runningor when the engineis hot.
- If petrolis spilled,do not attemptto startthe engine
butmovethe machineaway fromthe areaof spillage
and avoidcreatingany sourceof ignitionuntilpetrol
vaporshavedissipated.
Replaceall fuel tanksand container capssecurely.
Replacefaultysilencers.
Before using, always visually inspect to see that the
blades,bladeboltsand cutterassemblyare notworn or
damaged. Replace wornor damaged bladesand bolts
in sets to preservebalance.
On multi-bladed machines, t akecareas rotating oneblade
can cause otherbladesto rotate.
IlL Operation
Do not operate the engine in a confinedspace where
dangerouscarbonmonoxidefumescan collect.
Mow onlyin daylightor in goodartificiallight.
Beforeattempting tostarttheengine,disengage all blade
attachment clutchesand shiftintoneutral.
Do notuse on slopesof more than 10°.
Rememberthere isnosuchthingas a"safe"slope.Travel
ongrassslopesrequires particufarcare. T oguardagainst
overturning;
- do notstoporstartsuddenly when goingup ordown-
hill;
- engage clutchslowly, a lwayskeep machinein gear,
especiallywhen travelingdownhill;
- machinespeeds shouldbe keptlow on slopesand
duringtightturns;
- stay alert for humpsand hollowsand otherhidden
hazards;
- nevermow acrossthe face of the slope, unlessthe
lawnmoweris designedfor this purpose.
Use care when pullingloadsor usingheavyequipment.
- Use onlyapproveddrawbarhitchpoints.
- Limitloadstothose you can safelycontrol.
- Do notturn sharply.Use care when reversing.
- Use counterweight(s) o r wheel weightswhen sug-
gestedin the instruction handbook.
Watch outfor trafficwhen crossingor near roadways.
Stop the bladesfrom rotatingbeforecrossingsurfaces
otherthan grass.
When usingany attachments,neverdirectdischargeof
material towardbystandersnor allow anyone near the
machinewhilein operation.
Never operate the lawnmowerwith defective guards,
shieldsor withoutsafetyprotective devicesin place.
Do notchangethe enginegovernor settings oroverspeed
theengine.Operating theengineat excessive speed may
increasethe hazard ofpersonalinjury.
Beforeleavingthe operator'sposition:
- disengagethe powertake-offand lowerthe attach-
ments;
- changeintoneutraland set the parkingbrake;
- stop the engineand removethe key.
Disengagedrive to attachments,stop the engine,and
disconnect t he spark plugwire(s) or removethe ignition
key
- before cleaningblockagesor unclogging chute;
- before checking,cleaningor workingon the lawn-
mower;
- afterstriking a foreign object. Inspectthelawnmower
for damage and make repairsbeforerestartingand
operatingthe equipment;
if the machine starts to vibrateabnormally(check
immediately).
Disengagedriveto attachments whentransporting or not
in use.
Stop the engine and disengage drive to attachment
- before refueling;
before removing the grass catcher;
before making height adjustment unless adjustment
can be made from the operator's position.
