Output LevelAdjustment
Output leveladjustmentis a keypart of the
configurationprocess for any surroundsound
product.It is particularlyimportantfor a Dolby
Digitalreceiversuchasthe AVR120,as correct
output levelswill ensurethat you hearsound
tracks intheir proper placewith the proper
directionalityand intensity.
IMPORTANTNOTE:Listenersare often con-
fused about the operationof the surround
channels. While someassume that sound
shouldalwaysbe comingfrom eachspeaker,
mostof the time there will be little or no sound
in the surroundchannels. T his is becausethey
areonly usedwhen a moviedirectoror sound
mixerspecifically placessoundthereto create
ambiance, a specialeffect or to continueaction
from the front of the roomto the rear. W hen
the output levelsare properlyset, it is normal
for surroundspeakersto operateonly occasion-
ally.Artificially increasingthe volumeto the rear
speakers may destroythe illusion of an envelop-
ing soundfield that duplicatesthe wayyou
hear soundin a movietheater or concerthall.
Beforebeginningthe adjustmentprocess, m ake
certainthat all speakerconnectionshavebeen
properlymade.Thesystemvolumeshouldbe
setto the levelthat you will use duringa typi-
callisteningsession.Finally,makecertainthat
the Balance Control []
is set to the center
"12 o'clock" position.
Toassistin makingspeakerconfigurationset-
tings, the iconsinthe Speaker/Channel
Input Indicators [] changeas the speaker
type is selectedat eachposition. When only the
centericonbox containingthe abbreviationfor
the speakerposition is lit, the speakeris setfor
"small." Whenthe inner box andthe two outer
boxesare lit, the speakeris setfor "large."
When no indicatorappearsat a speakerloca-
tion, that position is set for "none" or "no"
speaker.
Forexample,in the following figure,the left
front and right front speakersareset for
"large," the center,surroundleft (SL)and sur-
round right (SR)speakersareset for small,and
