Remote Control Functions
IMPORTANTNOTE: T heAVR120'sremote
may be programmed to control up to eight
devices, i ncludingthe AVR120.Beforeusing the
remote,it is importantto rememberto pressthe
Input Selector Button O
that corresponds
to the unityou wish to operate.In addition,the
AVR120'sremoteisshippedfrom the factoryto
operatethe AVR120andmost HarmanKardon
CDor DVDplayersandcassette decks.The
remoteis also capableof operatinga wide vari-
ety of otherproductsusingthe control codes
that are part of the remote.Beforeusingthe
remotewith otherproducts, f ollow the instruc-
tions on pages27-30 to programthe proper
codesfor the productsin yoursystem.
It is alsoimportantto rememberthat manyof
the buttonson the remotetake on different
functions,dependingon the productselected
usingthe DeviceControlSelectors. Thedescrip-
tions shown hereprimarilydetail the functions
of the remotewhen it is usedto operatethe
AVR120.(Seepages31-32 for information
about alternatefunctionsfor the remote'sbut-
tons.)
_]I Power Off Button: Pressing t his button
turnsoff (places inthe Standbymode)the device
that waslastselected bypressing oneof the
Input Selectors q_l. Toplacethe AVR120in
the Standby mode,first pressthe AVRSelector
Button _
andthen pressthis button.
IR TransmitterWindow: Pointthis win-
dow towardsthe AVR120when pressing buttons
on the remoteto makecertainthat infraredcom-
mandsare properly received.
Program Indicator: Thisthree-colorindi-
cator is usedto guide youthrough the process
of programming the remote.(Seepages27-30
for informationon programming the remote.)

Power On Button: Pressthis button
to turn on power to the device that was last
selected by pressing one of the Input Selectors
_.
To turn on the AVR 120, press the AVR
Selector Button O.
I_I Input Selectors: Pressing oneof these
buttonswill performthreeactionsat the same
time. First,if the AVR120 is not turnedon, this
will power up the unit. Next, it will selectthe
sourceshown on the button asthe inputto the
AVR120.Finally,it will changethe remotecon-
trol so that it controlsthe deviceselected.After
pressingone of these buttonsyou must press
the AVR Selector Button _
again to oper-
ate the AVR120'sfunctionswith the remote.
AVR Selector: Pressing thisbuttonwill
switchthe remotesothat it will operatethe
AVR120'sfunctions. I f the AVR120is inthe
Standbymode,it will alsoturn the AVR120on.

AM/FM TunerSelect: Press this button to
selectthe AVR120'stuner asthe listening
choice. P ressing this button when the tuner is
alreadyin usewill switchbetweenthe AM and
FMbands.
TestButton: Press this buttonto begin
the sequence usedto calibratethe AVR120's
output levels. ( Seepages18-19 for moreinfor-
mation on calibratingthe AVR120.)
Sleep Button: Pressthis button to place
the unit in the Sleepmode.After the time
shown in the display,the AVR120will auto-
maticallygo into the Standbymode.Eachpress
of the button changesthe time until turn-off in
the following order:

Notethat this button is also usedto change
channelson yourTVwhen the TV is selected.
Thisbuttonis also usedto endthe process of
creatinga macrocommand.(Seepage28 for
moreinformationon creatingmacros.)

Mode Selector: Press this but-
ton to beginthe process of changingthe sur-
roundmode.After the button hasbeenpressed,
usethe Alv Buttons _
to selectthe
desiredsurroundmode.(Seepage 22 for more
information.)Note that this button is also used
to tune channelswhen the TVis selectedusing
the device Input Selector II_]D.Thisbutton is
also usedin part of the processof erasestored
macrocommands. ( Seepage 28 for moreinfor-
mation on macros.)
NOTE:TheSleep Button _
and Surround
Mode Selector I_) may alsofunction as the
Channel+ and - keyswhen the remoteis pro-
grammedfor usewith TVs,cable boxes, V CRs,
satellite receivers or other video deviceswith
tuners.Seepage 29 for informationon pro-
grammingthe remotefor ChannelControl
Punch-Through c apabilityso that you may
changechannelson a separatedevicewhen
the remoteis in AVRmode.
Night Mode: Pressthis buttonto activate
the Night mode.Thismode is availablein spe-
cially encodeddigital sources, a nd it preserves
dialog (centerchannel)intelligibilityat low
volumelevels.
Channel Select Button:Thisbuttonis
usedto startthe process of settingthe AVR120's
outputlevelsto an external s ource. O nce this but-
ton is pressed, usethe AI•

to selectthe channel b eingadjusted, t hen press
the Set Button qi]_, followedbythe AI•

again,to changethe levelset-

the surroundmode or digital inputdirectly, f irst

pressthe Surround Mode Selector I_) to
selecta surroundmodeor the Digital Select
Button @ to change the digital input)and
then pressthis buttonto scrollthroughthe list of
availablechoices.
• Button:Thisbutton is usedto change
the menuselectionor settingduringsomeof
the setupprocedures for the AVR120.
Set Button:Thisbutton is usedto enter
settingsinto the AVR120's memory.It is also
usedin the setupprocedures for delaytime,
speakerconfigurationand channeloutput level
adjustment.
Digital Select:Pressthis button to assign
one of the digital inputs_i"1_]i'1_lJ to a
source.(Seepage 23 for moreinformation on
using digital inputs.)
