ENGINE MAINTENANCE
Checking the Engine Oil
Onlyuse high qualitydetergentoil ratedwith APIserviceclassification
SF,SG,SH, or SJ. Selectthe oil's SAEviscositygradeaccordingto
the expectedoperatingtemperature. F ollowthe chart below.

Althoughmulti-viscosity oils (5W20,10W30,etc.)improve starting
in coldweather,they will result in increasedoil consumption when
usedabove32°RCheckyour engineoil levelmorefrequentlyto avoid
possibleenginedamagefrom runninglowon oil.
Tocheckthe engineoil, proceedas follows:

Ensurethat the tractoris on a levelsurface.
Cleantheoil fill area of anydebris.
Removethedipstickand wipe with a clean cloth.
Insertand tightendipstick.
Removethedipstickand checkthe oil level.It shouldbe at the
Fullmark on the dipstick.See Figure25.
Changing the Engine Oil
If the enginehas been recentlyrun,the engine,mufflerand sur-
roundingmetalsurfaceswill be hot and cancause burnsto the skin.
Exercisecautionto avoidburns.
NOTE:Theoil filter shouldbe changedat everyoil changeinterval.To
completean oil change,proceedas follows:
1. With engineOFF but still warm,disconnectsparkplug wireand
keepit awayfrom sparkplug.
2. Removethe oil fill cap/dipstickfrom theoil fill tube. See Figure26.

6. If low,add oil slowlyintothe engineoil fill. Do notoverfill.After
addingoil, wait one minuteand then recheckthe oil level.

3. Disconnecttheoil drain hosefrom the sideof the engine.
4. Turnand removethe oil draincap. Cardully lowerthequick oil
drain intoan approvedcontainer.
5. After the oil has drained,install theoil drain cap.Attachthe oil
drain hoseto the sideof theengine.
Usedoil is a hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly.
IDo notdiscardwith householdwaste.Checkwith your localauthori-
_tiesor SearsService Centerfor safe disposal/recycling facilities.
6. Reconnectsparkplug wire.
Donotoverfill.Overfillingwith oil maycausethe engine to not start,
hard starting,or engine smoking.If overthe FULLmark on the
dipstick,drain oil to reduceoil levelto FULL markon dipstick.
7. Replaceandtightendipstick.
