Smoke Alarm Locator

Model EI 159
The Locator is recommended for all installations having three
or more smoke alarms interconnected. The Smoke Alarm Loca-
tor stops all the units alarming except those smoke alarms actu-
ally sensing smoke, by disabling the interconnect feature for
about 10 minutes. The source of the alarm can quickly be located
and appropriate action taken (e.g. evacuate the premises, clear
cooking fumes etc). It significantly reduces the annoyance to
other occupants while an alarm is being investigated, this is par-
ticularly useful when an alarm occurs at night. (Disconnecting
the AC mains will not silence smoke alarms with battery back-
up). The Locator switch automatically restores the interconnect
feature after about 10 minutes. (If the original Smoke Alarm con-
tinues to sound after smoke has cleared, press the locator button
again to cancel)
It is easily installed as shown in the circuit diagrams. It must
not be used with smoke alarms from any other manufacturer.
Near the distribution board is often a good position for the Smoke
Alarm Locator. Mains powered systems must be wired according
to IEE regulations. The interconnect wire (terminal 1) and the
neutral wire (terminal 2) are connected to the two terminals on
the loose terminal block. (Note no connections are to be made to
the other terminals on this switch). Pushing the switch starts the
timer circuit and holds the interconnect line close to zero volts
and so none of the smoke alarms can signal to each other. How-
ever each individual smoke alarm will still operate and alarm if it
senses smoke itself. Ensure wiring in switch housing is double
insulated from the face plate screws.
