HP Server Processor Upgrade Installation Kit
The following includes steps to replace a processor or install an additional processor in the HP Server tc4100. The basic
server ships with one processor in the primary processor socket.
The HP Server tc4100 supports two processors that must operate at the same clock speed, cache size, and FSB speed.
Both processor sockets are located on the system board.

Complete processor installation and removal instructions can be found in both of the following sources:

The HP Server Operations and Maintenance Guide, on the HP Server Documentation CD-ROM shipped with your
HP Server, includes an installation chapter.

The HP Server Operations and Maintenance Guide for your HP Server can be viewed and printed from the HP web
site:
http://www.hp.com

Tools Required

An antistatic service kit (3M™ 8501/8502/8503 or equivalent). This kit includes a static-dissipating work surface, a
chassis clip lead, and a wrist strap.

Removing the Processor or Terminator

The installation procedure is the same for the rack-mounted models as for the pedestal models of the server once you
gain access to the system board.
CAUTION
Do not open the new processor's protective bag or remove it from the bag until you are
ready to install it.
Before you remove a processor from the antistatic container, touch a grounded, unpainted
metal surface on the HP Server tc4100 to discharge static electricity.
Use an antistatic wrist strap and a grounding mat. Wear a wrist-strap and use a static-
dissipating work surface connected to the chassis when handling components. Ensure that
the metal of the wrist strap contacts your skin.
1. Unpack the processor shipping box and check the contents against its packing list.
2. Verify the processor speed and FSB setting, before installing the second processor module.
3. Gracefully shut down the network operating system according to directions in your NOS documentation.
4. Power off your HP Server according to directions in the HP Server Operations and Maintenance Guide.
5. Disconnect the power cords and any connected phone lines.
WARNING
Power supplies will continue to provide standby current to the server until the power
cords are disconnected.

NOTE The system board is shown removed from the HP Server tc4100 for simplicity in the following figures, but it is not necessary to remove the system board to install the new processor module.

Center the heat sink properly over the additional processor. b. Locate the bottom notched edge of the heat sink and, when placing the heat sink over the processor, be sure that the notched edge faces the front panel of the HP Server.

    Warranty and Support This HP Server accessory is covered by a limited hardware warranty for a period of one year from receipt by the original end-user purchaser. Once installed in an HP Server, this accessory may carry the longer of either a one-year warranty or the remainder of the warranty period for the HP Server in which it is installed.
