Console Quick Start
HP Integrity BL c-Class Servers
Use this console quick start for an HP Integrity BL c‐Class server blade installed in the enclosure, set 
up, and ready to connect to a host console. 
 
This console quick start only provides basic steps. For detailed information, see the HP Integrity 
Installation Guide for your server blade or the HP Integrity Integrated Lights‐Out 2 Operations Guide. 
 
To connect to a host console, use one of the following methods: 
Accessing iLO 2 With DHCP Enabled. Use the Onboard Administrator iLO (OA/iLO) 
network port on the rear of the enclosure. If the OA/iLO network port on the enclosure is 
connected to a local network that has a DHCP server, your iLO 2 MP IP address is 
automatically generated by the DHCP server. The server blade is factory set with DHCP 
enabled. 
Accessing iLO 2 With No Network Connection. Use the RS‐232 port on the SUV cable. If 
the enclosure is not connected to any network, you must configure the server blade through 
the RS‐232 serial console port on the SUV cable. 
Accessing iLO 2 With DHCP Enabled 
1. Connect a LAN cable to the iLO/OA network port on the rear of the enclosure. The 
following graphic shows both available enclosures for the BL c‐Class server blades.

2. Connect the LAN cable to a local network that has a DHCP server.  
3. Select Blade or Port Info on the LCD display panel on the front of the enclosure. 
4. Select Blade Info, select the appropriate server blade, and write down the iLO 2 MP IP 
address.

  • Page 2 5. Access iLO 2 through telnet, SSH, or the web using the DHCP‐assigned IP address.  Access vMedia to Boot or  6. Access vMedia to boot or install the operating system. See  Install an Operating System  below for instructions.  Accessing iLO 2 With No Network Connection  1. Connect the RS‐232 port on the SUV cable to the SUV cable port on the server blade. See the  HP Integrity Installation Guide for your server blade for the location of the SUV cable port.    2. Connect a DB9f to DB9f cable to the RS‐232 port on the SUV cable.  3. Connect the other end of the DB9f to DB9f cable to a terminal emulator.  Once you are physically connected, the next step is to configure the console. The following sections  provide high‐level console configuration information. For detailed information on configuring the    console, see the HP Integrity Installation Guide included with the server blade documentation. iLO 2 MP LAN  DHCP with DNS is the HP‐recommended method to configure the LAN. DHCP with DNS comes  preconfigured with default factory settings, including a default user account and password. By  default, the iLO 2 MP LAN uses DHCP to retrieve a new LAN address for itself. When this occurs,  the default DNS name is set to mp<MACADDRESS>.  The MAC address for the iLO 2 MP LAN is printed on a label on the server blade. If Dynamic DNS  (DDNS) is enabled in the data center, the DNS server automatically registers the new name and  enables you to access iLO 2 through the web browser by entering https://mp<MACADDRESS>/, or  through telnet at DNS name mp<MACADDRESS>. For example, if the MAC address is 00306e22b403,  enter the following URL: https://mp00306e22b403/.   For information on iLO 2, see the HP Integrity Integrated Lights‐Out 2 Operations Guide on the HP  website at: http://www.docs.hp.com/en/hw.html and search for your server blade product number.  Accessing vMedia to Boot or Install an Operating System  vMedia provides you with virtual devices that mimic physical hardware devices, such as a virtual  CD/DVD drive that connects through the network to the managed server just as if it was physically  connected. With vMedia you can boot and install an OS from the network drives.  Booting from the iLO 2 virtual CD/DVD enables you to deploy an operating system from network  drives with DVD or CDs that contain data in the El Torito Bootable CD format. ...
  • Page 3 To access iLO 2 vMedia devices, follow these steps:  1. After you access iLO 2, click Web Administration to access the web interface.  2. Enter Admin in the User Name field, and enter Admin in the Password field.  Important  For security purposes, HP recommends changing the default login.  3. Click the Virtual Media tab, and click Launch to load the vMedia applet and connect to the  available USB CD/DVD devices. The vMedia applet must remain open when using a virtual  media device.  4. Select Local Media Drive and select the drive letter of the physical CD/DVD drive on your  client system from the menu.  Click Connect. The connected drive displays as the local CD drive on the host server. Use  this drive to boot or install an OS. When connected, virtual devices are available to the host  server until you close the vMedia applet or sign out of the web session.  5. When you finish using the virtual CD/DVD drive, disconnect the device from the host server  or close the applet.  On servers without a locally attached CD/DVD drive, such as the BL c‐Class server blades, the  virtual CD/DVD is the first CD/DVD accessible at /dev/cdrom. Mount the virtual CD/DVD as a  normal CD/DVD device using the following command: mount /mnt/cdrom1.  If the host server operating system supports USB mass storage devices, the iLO 2 virtual CD/DVD is  also available after the host server operating system loads. You can use the iLO 2 virtual CD/DVD  when the host server operating system is running to upgrade device drivers, install software, and  perform other tasks.  For more information on vMedia, see the HP Integrity Integrated Lights‐Out 2 Operations Guide.  Linux and Windows  You can use VGA to connect consoles that use Linux® and Windows® operating systems, but the  VGA port does not connect to iLO 2. Ensure that the proper graphics monitor path is specified in  the EFI Boot Manager Console Configuration menu. To configure an ASCII console configured in  Linux or Windows, use the EFI Boot Manager Console Configuration menu.  For Linux information on changing the default console and using the EFI Boot Manager  Configuration Options, see Configuring Your Console in Installing Linux on HP Integrity Servers  on the HP website at: http://www.docs.hp.com/en/linux.html under HP Enablement Kit for Linux  on HP Integrity Servers Installation CD User Guide.   For Windows information on the default console, see Windows on HP Integrity  Servers on the following HP websites at: ...
  • Page 4 HP‐UX and OpenVMS  The HP‐UX and OpenVMS operating systems use the console connection of the iLO 2 MP as the  default console. However, if the iLO 2 MP console path is not selected in the EFI Boot Manager  Console Configuration menu, HP‐UX messages may not be presented to the console device. Also,  HP‐UX systems typically must only have the iLO 2 MP console path selected in the EFI Boot  Manager Console Configuration menu.  You can also use VGA to connect consoles that use HP‐UX and OpenVMS operating systems. On  the front of the Integrity server blade, connect the SUV cable to the local I/O connector.  For information on changing the default console and using the EFI Boot Manager Configuration  Options, see Selecting Your HP‐UX Console in the HP‐UX Installation and Update Guide on the HP  website at: http://www.docs.hp.com/en.    Select your operating system version in By OS Release and find the guide under Installing and  Updating.  Extensible Firmware Interface  Prior to installing and booting an operating system, all console interaction on a server blade is  through system firmware. System firmware communicates to the console connections specified in  the EFI Boot Manager Console Configuration options. These configuration options must match the  physical console device connections.   Once an operating system is installed, the default system console output is determined and is  dependent on the EFI Boot Manager Console Configuration setting. For information on changing  the default console and using the EFI Boot Manager Configuration Options, see your operating  system documentation.  IMPORTANT  Failure to properly configure the console device can result in the inability of the  operating system to interact with the server. This symptom can be misinterpreted  as a system hang.                    *5991-8054* March 2009 HP Part Number...
