Sonata
M a d I au d I o c o N V e r t e r B oX
to simplify your audio signal
infrastructure, consider the sonata
MadI converter boxes. sonata supports
aes balanced and unbalanced audio, as
well as analog audio conversion to and
from the MadI signaling interface.
Sonata is a MADI conversion tool that
allows you to put 64 audio signals onto
one single coax cable. This allows you to
minimize your audio wiring, interconnect
with existing MADI-supported devices,
and easily make long audio runs.
MADI
MADI is an acronym for Multiple Audio
Data Interface. This means that there
can be multiple audio signals on a single
physical interconnect—a coax. Sonata
conversion tools support 64 audio
channels on one coaxial cable
(64 channels = 32 AES streams).
Signal Formats Supported
Balanced 110Ω AES – There is a
conversion option to go both to and from
MADI with 110Ω AES/EBU connections.
Unbalanced 75Ω AES – There is a
conversion option to go both to and from
MADI with 75Ω AES connections.
Analog – There is a conversion option to
go both to and from MADI with analog
connections.
KEY FEATURES
Six conversion tools available:
AES 75Ω to MADI
AES/EBU 110Ω to MADI
Analog to MADI
MADI to AES 75Ω
MADI to AES/EBU 110Ω
MADI to analog
Supports 64 channels to/from MADI:
Each model supports 64 channels of
audio multiplexed to/from one MADI
stream

Designed for Video Environments
Although Sonata is an audio processing
tool, it is designed with video reference
inputs allowing the proper integration
into video broadcast environments. This
includes 50 and 59.94 frame rates for SD
and HD signaling types.
This video reference input is used to
support proper timing and switching of
the audio signals as well as to support
Dolby E audio formats.
Sonata also supports AES word clock as
a reference input.
Fully redundant power supplies are
standard for high reliability.
Integrates with MADI-supported
Products
MADI connections are supported on
the Grass Valley
Apex Audio Routing
Switcher as well as the Maestro
Control Switcher. MADI is also common
on audio switching consoles as well.
These integration options allow you to
optimize your audio environment.
Supports AES or analog inputs:
75Ω, 110Ω and analog I/O are all
supported
Supports video reference timing:
SD or HD rate, 50 or 59.94 rate video
reference timing can be used
Interconnection with Apex and
Maestro:
Both Apex and Maestro have MADI
input and output ports for audio
product data sheet
Use Sonata to extend the audio
processing with Maestro from eight
channels to 16 channels. Also use Sonata
to support an analog audio master
control. Use Sonata with Apex to create
distributed audio routing infrastructure
as well as mix analog and digital
infrastructures.
Sample Rate Conversion
Sonata AES models support sample rate
conversion. They accept input rates from
32 kHz to 100 kHz all converted to
48 kHz. This feature can also be used
to cost effectively synchronize a set of
audio signals.
A Tool for Minimizing Wiring
One of the values of the MADI interface
is simplified wiring. By multiplexing
multiple audio channels on to one coax,
cabling requirements can be reduced.
Master
Minimizing the amount of cable is
valuable in OB van applications and
especially valuable when interconnecting
OB vans.
Minimized wiring is also a value
especially in retrofit situations where
running one cable instead of 32 saves
labor and is physically realizable.
Interconnection with audio consoles:
Most audio consoles support AES10
standard; the MADI standard over
coax connections
Supports multiple signal sample rates
AES inputs ranging from 32 kHz to
96 kHz sampling can be received by
Sonata and re-sampled to 48 kHz
