Overview The Fiery X3e 7255BW-KM embeds computer connectivity and highly efficient PCL printing capacity into the copier. The Fiery X3e 7255BW-KM is shipped with all necessary software already installed. This guide refers to the Fiery X3e 7255BW-KM as the “Fiery X3e”.
Accessing the Fiery X3e Accessing the Fiery X3e To service the Fiery X3e, you need to power off and unplug the copier, remove the Fiery X3e from the back panel of the copier, and remove the top panel of the Fiery X3e. For more information, see Fiery X3e installation instructions (not provided in this guide).
Checking connections Checking connections The most common causes of hardware problems are faulty or loose connections. To verify connections, first check the following external connections: • Network connection at the faceplate • Parallel port connection at the faceplate Then verify the following internal connections: •...
LEDs and jumpers LEDs and jumpers Activity indicators —Adjacent to the on-board RJ-45 connector, two green LEDs indicate network activity and link speed. One LED indicates network activity and lights when data is present; therefore, it blinks during data transmission. The other LED indicates link speed and lights at 100Mbps and turns off at 10Mbps.
Replacing Fiery X3e components Replacing the Fiery X3e motherboard When the Fiery X3e motherboard needs to be replaced, use the following procedure. For screw locations, see Figure A on page 2. O SHUT DOWN THE IERY Always verify that the Fiery X3e is not in use before you power off or restart it. Make sure that the system is not ripping or printing a job.

Replacing Fiery X3e components O REPLACE THE IERY E MOTHERBOARD 1. Remove and set aside the 8 screws that attach the motherboard to the chassis. 2. Remove and set aside the 2 screws that attach the parallel port connector to the chassis. (See Figure C on page 5 for location of the parallel port.) 3.
Replacing Fiery X3e components Replacing a DIMM (dual in-line memory module) Each DIMM is held in place by a lever at each end of its socket on the Fiery X3e. The standard configuration for the Fiery X3e is one 128MB DIMM installed in socket J48.
Restoring functionality after service Restoring functionality after service To complete any service procedures performed on the Fiery X3e, install the Fiery X3e inside the copier, as described in the Fiery X3e installation instructions (not provided in this guide) and verify it is working properly. To verify the installation, check the connections of the Fiery X3e, first to the copier and then the network, and the parallel port.
Using the Control Panel Using the Control Panel The LCD on the copier Control Panel is a touch panel display. You can use the copier Control Panel to check Fiery X3e status and perform Fiery X3e functions, such as print test pages.
Using the Control Panel Online/Offline To use the Control Panel LCD for certain Fiery X3e functions, such as printing test pages, the Fiery X3e must be online before you perform the function. The Control Panel LCD indicates if the copier is offline. When the Fiery X3e is online, it can receive data over the network from a networked computer.

Verifying connection to the network Verifying connection to the network The Fiery X3e provides twisted pair connectivity to an Ethernet network. This section describes how to connect the Fiery X3e to the network and print test documents in order to verify the connection. Category 3, category 4, or category 5 unshielded twisted pair (UTP) network cable can be used for 10BaseT.

Verifying connection to the network O CONNECT A TWISTED PAIR CABLE TO THE IERY 1. Power off the copier before connecting the Fiery X3e to any network device. 2. Connect the network cable to the RJ-45 connector on the Fiery X3e. 3.
Verifying the parallel port connection Verifying the parallel port connection The Fiery X3e provides a high-speed parallel port for direct cable connection to the parallel port of a PC. The parallel port can be used for installing system software (see page 17) and for printing documents.
System Software System Software The Fiery X3e is shipped with system software already installed in flash memory. When you upgrade to a newer version of system software or if you discover a defect in the current system, you need to reinstall system software on the Fiery X3e. (HDD upgrade kits and replacement HDDs are shipped with system software already installed on the HDDs.) You also may try reinstalling system software when you are troubleshooting the system, especially if checking connections does not solve the problem.
System Software Installing System Software The Fiery X3e System Software CD includes two files: • Boot.efi—the file that allows the copier LCD to display the menu commands for installing the system. • System.efi—the file containing the system and Fiery ® software.

The troubleshooting process The following sections identify the source of common problems that may occur with the Fiery X3e and suggests ways of correcting them. The troubleshooting process The troubleshooting process is designed to eliminate the most obvious causes of failure before progressing to more complex issues.
Where problems occur Where problems occur The Fiery X3e is a built-in print server for copiers, and it is generally part of a configuration like the one shown in Figure J. Problems may occur in one of the following areas: •...
Before you go to the customer site Before you go to the customer site Before you make a service call to a customer site, talk to the customer on the phone, and try to answer the following questions: 1. Does the copier work? If the copier works, but the user cannot print the Fiery X3e PCL Test page, a service call is probably required.
Preliminary on-site checkout Preliminary on-site checkout Your goal in the preliminary on-site checkout is to eliminate obvious problems, such as loose or missing cables and connectors. Checking connections Before you remove the copier cover: • Check that external interface cables are plugged into the proper connectors on the side panel of the copier.
Page 35
Preliminary on-site checkout O CHECK INTERNAL CONNECTIONS Before you touch any parts inside the copier, wear an ESD grounding strap and follow standard ESD (electrostatic discharge) precautions. 1. Inspect internal ribbon cables, if any, to see if they are intact. Faulty ribbon cables are easily overlooked.
Preliminary on-site checkout Checking the network Printing problems may arise if the network hardware or software is not set up properly or does not match network settings on the Fiery X3e. Problems may also arise when printing from a specific application or printing a particular file. Most of these problems show up as printing problems and do not necessarily indicate a Fiery X3e malfunction.
