  • Page 4 FlyerChief system features Locomotive control ou may choose to control your FlyerChief locomotive with the included FlyerChief remote (using a transformer or power supply capable of supplying a constant 18 VAC or 18 VDC to the track) or using a transformer. Use the TRANSFORMER/REMOTE control switch to select between FlyerChief remote operation or conventional AC transformer operation.

  • Page 8 Remote operations Running your locomotive with the FlyerChief remote Slide the TRANSFORMER/REMOTE switch to the REMOTE position. Refer to Figure 1 on page 5 for the location of this switch. With track power turned off, place your locomotive on American Flyer or S gauge 2-rail track.
  • Page 9 Each locomotive is paired with a unique remote. A locomotive will only respond to commands from its corresponding remote. If you attempt to operate two of the exact same locomotives (same type, roadname, and Lionel part number), then one remote will control both locomotives simultaneously.
  • Page 10 • Parents should periodically inspect this product for potential hazards and, if necessary, have them repaired by a Factory Trained Authorized Lionel Service Station or Lionel Service. In the event that such a condition exists, the transformer should not be used until it has been properly repaired.
  • Page 11 Creating your layout Building your American Flyer layout our set comes with twelve curved sections, three 10" straight sections, and terminal section of track. Figure 3 shows the oval layout that you can build with these track sections. You may choose to add more FasTrack track sections to create an endless number of exciting track arrange- ments for more fun, action, and variety.

Your locomotive goes through a repeating pattern of operations: neutral, forward, neutral, reverse, neutral, and so on. To sequence the reverse unit, press the DIRECTION button on your transformer, or briefly bring the throttle all the way back to the OFF position and then forward.
  • Page 14 Locomotive operation Reverse unit procedure he electronic reverse unit inside your American Flyer locomotive acts like the transmission in a car. When you apply power to the track, the locomotive moves in the direction specified by the reverse unit—or it sits in neutral, awaiting another power interruption. Power interruptions are the signal that tells the reverse unit to sequence to the next operational state.

The overall volume of the sounds in your locomotive can be adjusted, but this requires the use of the FlyerChief remote (in remote operation mode).
  • Page 17 We recommend that you purchase a Lionel Lubrication and Maintenance Kit (part no. 6-62927), available from your Lionel dealer. Two basic rules to keep in mind: never over-lubricate (a small amount will do), and avoid getting grease or oil on the locomotive wheels, contact rollers, or your track.

If you are uncomfortable with this operation, you may choose to have the traction tires replaced by your authorized Lionel Service Center or Lionel Service.

During the course of normal caboose operations, the lamp may require replacement. Follow these steps and refer to Figure 8 as you replace the lamp.
