• Parents should periodically inspect this product for potential hazards and, if necessary, have them repaired by an authorized Lionel Service Center. In the event that such a condi- tion exists, the transformer should not be used until it has been properly repaired.
By adding more American Flyer track sections, you can create an endless number of excit- ing track arrangements for more fun, action, and variety. The railroad empire of your dreams can quickly become a reality! Figure 1.
• Track connections (or Lockon connections) must be made with 18-gauge wire or heavier. Larger layouts require a minimum of 16-gauge wire. 1. Attach a Lionel Lockon to your track. As illustrated in Figure 3, slide the bottom edge of the outside rail into the metal lip on the Lockon.
Creating your layout Wiring your PowerMax Transformer (continued) 2. Attach one wire to the Lockon spring clip terminal labeled “1” and connect it to the power terminal labeled “A”. All Controller connections are illus- trated in Figure 4. To attach the wire to the Lockon, press down on the top of the terminal clip so that a metal loop is formed.
The curves must have a radius of at least 20”. Power up your locomotive with your transformer. Your locomotive is designed to operate on 6-18 volts alternating cur- rent. Virtually all American Flyer or Lionel alternating-current transformers are suitable. Do not power your locomotive with direct current (DC).
The smoke generator requires the periodic addition of Lionel smoke fluid in order to func- tion. Pierce the tube end with a pin, then add four to eight drops of fluid directly into the locomotive’s stack.
To correct this problem, simply turn off the PowerMax Transformer, then turn it back on. The PowerMax Transformer may cause random whistles in the Lionel Mighty note! ™...

Whistle/Horn activates the whistle or horn sound effect in your lionel locomotives. press Throttle Controls your locomotive’s speed. throw the whistlE/horn to begin the sound; release the button to end it.
Running your train Locking your locomotive into a single operational state o select a single operational state for your locomotive (for example, forward only), you can deactivate the reverse unit’s sequencing function with the DIRECTION CONTROL switch. Get your locomotive moving in the desired direction, then slow it down without stopping. Set the DIRECTION CONTROL switch to OFF.
PowerMax Transformer operation Powering your layout with the PowerMax Transformer our PowerMax Transformer provides a total output of 1.8 amps. Also, available voltage depends on how much load is on the output. Generally, track voltage is 0-16 volts (AC). You may momentarily approach or exceed the 1.8 amp limit of the PowerMax Transformer when pulling illuminated cars, or fighting over grades with heavy loads.
PowerMax Transformer operation Troubleshooting No lights or operation Be sure PowerMax Transformer is plugged in. Train runs, but WHISTLE/HORN, BELL, and DIRECTION buttons do not work Check track connections. The track must be connected to the “A” and “U” terminals on the Transformer.
We recommend that you purchase a Lionel Lubrication and Maintenance Kit (6-62927), available from your Lionel dealer. Two basic rules to keep in mind: never over-lubricate (a small amount will do), and avoid getting grease or oil on the locomotive’s wheels or your track.
Maintaining and servicing your set Replacing the traction tires our locomotive is equipped with two traction tires (Lionel part no. 640-8039-206). During the course of normal operations, the traction tires may become worn out. To replace the traction tires, use a 3/16” nut driver to remove the drive rod nut. Slip off the worn tire and position the replacement tire around the wheel.
Maintaining and servicing your set Replacing your caboose's lamp our Square Window Caboose is illuminated by one lamp, Lionel part no. 600-0057-300. During the course of normal operations, the lamp may require replacement. Follow these steps and refer to Figure 9 as you replace the lamp.
Maintaining and servicing your set Operating your Christmas Music Refrigerator Car our Christmas Music Refrigerator Car requires one nine-volt alkaline battery. To install the battery (not included), simply pull away the sides of the body and lift it off the frame. Attach the battery harness to the battery, then slide the battery into the holder.
