Installation and Maintenance Instructions
ASCO™ solenoid operators, increased security / encapsulation
type WBLP
GENERAL
These Installation and Maintenance Instructions for
solenoid operator type WBLP are a general supplement
to the specific I&M sheet for the solenoid valve. These
operators are identified by the prefix WBLP before the
catalogue number. Always use both I&M sheets for in-
stalling and maintaining the solenoid valve.

INSTALLATION
Special conditions for safe use:
Our components are intended to be used only within the
technical characteristics specified on the nameplate. So-
lenoid operators Type WBLP are designed to be installed
in potentially explosive atmospheres caused by gases of
groups IIA, IIB and IIC, vapours or mists of (category 2G)
and dusts (category 2D). The surface temperature clas-
sification is T4-T135°C and depends on the power rating
and ambient temperature stated on the coil.
Depending on the ambient temperature/power rating,
a heat resistant cable suitable for the temperature indi-
cated on the coil must be used.
The voltage indicated on the coil may only vary within a ±10%
range of the nominal voltage.

1) Minimum ambient temperature: -40°C. This tem-
perature may be limited by the operating temperature
rating of the pilot valve or spool valve.
WARNING: In case of use in zone 1 group IIC, the mag-
netic head WBLP must be protected against the flow of
surrounding air and the friction in order to avoid any
electrostatic charge of the envelope made of synthetic
material. The use of dry clothes and/or the friction on
the solenoid surface have to be avoided during installa-
60 Hz
tion and maintenance.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION
3.0
3.0
The solenoid valve must be installed under the respon-
sibility of the company operating the industrial site. The
3.0
system as a whole must conform to standard EN60079-14.
3.0
Before starting any work, turn off the electrical cur-

rent to power off the components.
All screw terminals must be tightened to the appropriate
torque, see table following pages, prior to operation (max.
wire section 3 x 1.5 mm
). Strip the outer insulation of the
2
cable over approx. 30 mm and the insulation from the leads
over 8 mm. Insert wires through the cable gland and connect

wires to the terminals of the coil.
Cables allowed to be used:
- O.D. between 7 mm to 8.5 mm
- O.D. between 9.4 mm to 10.5 mm
Connect cable ground wire to the internal ground termi-
nal. Keep some slack in the leads between cable entry
and coil to avoid excessive strain on the leads. Assemble
the cable gland and tighten the elastomer compression
seals so that it fits tightly around the cable.
Two seals available and identified:
- W/o any additional marking: I.D. 6.8 mm for cables with
O.D. between 7 mm to 8.5 mm
- With red dot mark: I.D. 9 mm for cables with O.D. be-
tween 9.4 to 10.5 mm
The solenoid can be rotated 360° to select the most favorable
position for the cable entry. Close the enclosure and tighten
4 cover screws securely to torque indicated. The solenoid
housing is provided with an external connection facility

connectors.
The electrical connection is made by

Operation: Before pressurising the system, first carry out
an electrical test. Apply power to the coil several times
and listen for the metallic «click» indicating the solenoid
operator is working.
Personnel working with the components must be familiar
with electric controls, such as redundancies and feedback
(electronic controls), where applicable.
Use: The coils are designed for continuous operation and
may therefore become hot.
NOTE: The voltage across the terminals of the coil must
not be more than 10% greater or 10% less than
the nominal voltage.
If the solenoid valve is easily accessible, provide for
means of protection to prevent accidental contact that
may cause burns. To avoid overheating, do not operate
the solenoid valve in a confined space without sufficient
ventilation.
An additional clamping of the cable has to be made, in
order to do not transmit or twisting to the entry cable,
according to EN 60079-0 Annex A (clause A.2.3.2).
Installation and Maintenance Instructions
type WBLP
Failure to stay within the electrical range of the coil rat-
ing will result in damage to or premature failure of the
coil. This will also invalidate its approval for use in explo-
sive atmospheres caused by gases or dusts.
WARNING: Unauthorised personnel is not permitted to
disassemble or remove the coil assembly.
Take care not to damage the mating surfaces when disas-
sembling or re-assembling the coil assembly.
Wrong assembly will invalidate the approval.
To prevent the risk of personal injury or property damage,
do not touch the solenoid operator. It can become hot
under normal operation conditions. If the solenoid valve
is easily accessible, the installer must provide protection
against accidental contact.
For servicing, refer to the solenoid valve's Installation
and Maintenance Instructions.
Spare parts kits are available (contact us). If problems
arise during installation or maintenance or in case of
doubt, please contact us or one of our authorised rep-
resentatives.
If the solenoid valve does not operate:
- Check that the power supply corresponds to that
indicated on the nameplate.
- Check the electrical connections on the coil.
- Check the continuity of the coil circuit as with type m
encapsulation, thermal protection in the event of an
operating fault, is provided for AC/DC by a thermal
cut-out integral with the coil.
CAUTION: Prior to any maintenance work, power off
DISASSEMBLY AND RE-ASSEMBLY OF SOLENOID
OPERATOR ON VALVE:
This operation must be carried out by suitably qualified
personnel.
Unscrew the 4 screws and remove the cover.
Disconnect the electrical wires, remove the coil.
Proceed in reverse order to re-install.
The solenoid operator must be fully reassembled as the
housing and internal parts close the magnetic circuit.
Replacement of screw no. 1: Only use screws with 700 N/mm
minimum tensile strength.
In case of replacement of parts by the user, the trace-
ability of the final product cannot be guaranteed by
us and must be ensured by the user.
Wrong assembly will invalidate the approval.
