The Maintenance chapter de-
scribes straightforward proced-

ures for checking and replacing
certain wear parts.
Special tightening torques are lis-
ted as applicable. The tightening
torques for the threaded fasten-
ers on your motorcycle are listed
in the section entitled "Technical
data".
Below you will find an overview
z
of all the maintenance tasks that
have to be carried out as soon as
the motorcycle has logged cer-
tain operating hours. The over-
view also includes descriptions of
the tasks that have to be carried
out before and after each off-
road ride.
You will find information on more
extensive maintenance and re-
pair work in the Repair Manual
(RepROM) that also accompanies
your motorcycle.
Some of the work calls for spe-
cial tools and a thorough know-
ledge of motorcycle technology.
If you are in doubt consult a spe-
cialist workshop, preferably your
authorised BMW Motorrad deal-
er.

Regular maintenance

Running-in check
The running-in check must be
performed after two hours' oper-
ation and must be entrusted to
a specialist workshop, preferably
an authorised BMW Motorrad
dealer. See the "Inspection in-
structions" in the Repair Manual
(RepROM) for detailed descrip-
tions.
Work to be performed
Read out fault memory
Check air-filter element
Check for dirt in the clean-side
chamber of the intake air silen-
cer
Check the fuel system
Check the exhaust system
Check the security of the
threaded fasteners for frame,
side stand and trim panels
Check the cooling system
Check the front and rear brake
pads and brake discs for wear
Visually inspect the brake
pipes, brake hoses and
connections
Check the brake fluid level,
front and rear
Check the security of the
spring strut and check for leaks
Check the steering-head bear-

ing

Check and vent the telescopic
forks
Check the rear wheel swinging
arm and the swinging-arm pivot
bearings
