Subject: Engine oil capacity
Models: R 1200 GS (K50, 0A11)
Details: BMW Motorrad has ascertained that the engine oil capacity figure stated in the RSD (Repair and
Service Data BMW Motorrad) DVD for an oil change including oil filter is too high. Overfilling
beyond the maximum permissible oil level can result in malfunctions in the engine (e.g. the
clutch).
The engine oil capacity after an oil change depends on the conditions under which the used oil
was drained (e.g. engine temperature, how the vehicle was positioned), so the quantity actually
required can vary.
Aftersales As of RSD version 06/2013 the maximum capacity for an engine-oil change with filter was
solution:
reduced to 4.0 liters. This figure is a guide value. The actual quantity of engine oil required
depends on the conditions under which the used oil was drained (e.g. engine temperature, how
the vehicle was positioned). After draining the engine oil per work item 11 00 209, the filling of
engine oil with filter change must be carried out as described on the following page.
This oil fill procedure will be added to work item 11 00 209 as of RSD version 12/2013. From
then on, always check the latest edition of the RSD for details.
