Document TB13-03-01
NOTIFIER has identified an issue that could affect the normal operation of NBG-10 series
pull stations manufactured between 1992 through 2010. The majority were manufactured
from 1992 through 2000. See table on page 2 for a list of potentially affected pull station
model numbers and the recommended NBG-12 series replacement model numbers.
The issue is related to the seal installed around the alarm switch, which can deteriorate over
time preventing the switch from signaling an alarm when the pull station is activated.
Due the age of these pull stations and the fact that all products have a finite service life
NOTIFIER recommends the replacement of all NBG-10 series pull stations. While there is
no industry standard for replacement intervals for pull stations, mechanical devices are not
intended to be in service indefinitely. This is an opportunity to upgrade your customers
existing NBG-10 series pull stations to the newer, more aesthetically pleasing NBG-12
series pull stations.
While there's a high probability that abnormal pull station operation would be identified
during the annual testing requirements prescribed by NFPA 72, NOTIFIER recommends all
NBG-10 series pull stations be replaced with a new pull station. If the pull station is not
replaced a new factory provided alarm switch seal be should be installed at the next
scheduled service interval. See the procedure shown below. In addition to replacing the seal
these pull stations should be inspected for cracking/fracturing of the plastic housing or
bending of the pull station backplate. Any pull station showing signs of cracking of the
housing, or bending of the backplate should be replaced. Please refer to figures 5 and 6 for
assistance in determining if the pull station housing/backplate may be compromised. Red
button alarm switches do not require seals, see figure 7 below.
Note: The NBG-10 series pull stations were distributed under multiple brands which are
also subject to this issue. Please refer to the table on page 2. Any of the pull stations
referenced in the table on page 2 should either be replaced, or a new factory provided alarm
switch seal should be installed.
NBG-10 Series Inspection and Seal Replacement Procedure
1. Prior to performing pull station inspection, replacement or alarm switch seal
replacement, please ensure that the proper precautions have been taken. This may
include disabling the notification appliance circuits or off premise reporting. Opening
the NBG-10 series pull stations will result in an alarm condition.
