As you can see from this diagram, the controller can drive multiple codecs, and these codecs can operate independently of
one another, allowing different numbers of streams to be routed through each codec at different sampling rates.
One of the obstacles to improved sound quality currently is with DVD-Audio (DVD-A), the emerging audio standard.
Presently, even if you do get everything together—8-channel speakers, a DVD-A disc, and a system board with a high-
definition codec—you still do not get full audio bit-rate playback. Why? Because of copyright protection issues.
The full range of DVD-A formats (up to 192 Khz / 24 bit) are supported by Microsoft® DirectSound® and the Intel drivers.
However, DVD-Audio player software down-samples to 48 Khz / 16-bit when playing back DVD-A–encrypted content on
current PC hardware and software driver systems. The reason is that standard PC audio offers insufficient content
protection for the copyright holders, so the audio playback is crippled.
