Protector P32M User’s Manual, Revision 1.0 2 OVERVIEW The GDS Corp PROTECTOR P32M System Controller is designed to provide power for and monitor signals from up to 32 wired gas monitors using the MODBUS protocol over a two-wire RS-485 serial communications link.

3 INSTALLATION DC POWER INPUT CONNECTION The PROTECTOR P32M is designed to operate on a clean source of +12VDC to +30VDC. Voltage spikes above +30V or below +12V can permanently damage the unit. When using a DC source, connect the (+) and (-) wiring to the Main Terminal Board as shown below.

Protector P32M User’s Manual, Revision 1.0 AC POWER INPUT CONNECTION The PROTECTOR P32M can be ordered with an internal AC power supply as shown below. In this case, a source of 110VAC or 220VAC (50/60 Hz) should be connected to the power supply as shown below.

Protector P32M User’s Manual, Revision 1.0 CONNECTING MODBUS SENSORS The PROTECTOR P32M is designed to work with gas detectors and gas monitors that communicate via MODBUS RTU protocol using RS-485 serial balanced multipoint signaling. For maximum communications reliability, MODBUS sensors must be wired in a ‘daisy-chain’...

As a result, data on bus will be corrupted and a communications error will occur. RECOMMENDED MODBUS SENSOR CONNECTION Since both power and signal must pass through each sensor, GDS Corp recommends the installation of a MODBUS WIRING JUNCTION BOX (MJB). This junction box is attached to the gas detector and provides convenient wiring terminals for incoming and outgoing wiring.

The PROTECTOR P32M includes a single non-isolated RS-485 serial MODBUS output port. This port allows a remote MODBUS master to query the PROTECTOR P32M to retrieve gas levels, alarm conditions and other data. See SPECIFICATIONS for serial port configuration and MODBUS REGISTERS for more detail on data available over MODBUS.

Protector P32M User’s Manual, Revision 1.0 ALARM RELAYS The PROTECTOR P32M has four dry-contact SPDT relays that can be used to control external lights, horns, or other warning devices. Each relay has a COMMON, NORMALLY OPEN and NORMALLY CLOSED contact. When the relay is NOT energized, a connection exists between COMMON and NORMALLY CLOSED.

Protector P32M User’s Manual, Revision 1.0 FAULT RELAY The PROTECTOR P32M has a single wet-contact FAULT output that can be used to drive an external fault indicator light. The output DC voltage will be determined by the type of input power.

4 PROGRAMMING & SETUP DEVICE PROGRAMMING After installation, the PROTECTOR P32M system controller must be programmed to support connected sensors and other devices. Each channel MUST be programmed using the CHANNEL CONFIGURATION MENU, and global settings for the entire controller (for example, fault indication and MODBUS address) may be programmed using the Advanced Configuration Menu detailed later in this chapter.
