    ESCRIPTION PERATION The GNS 480 Color GPS/Nav/Comm is a panel-mounted product that contains a GPS/WAAS en- gine, VHF Comm, and VHF Nav in an integrated unit with a moving map and color display. The GNS 480 will also control a remote transponder.

    PERATION 1.5.1 General Description The GNS 480 is a GPS/NAV/COMM unit with a sunlight readable 256 color AMLCD display with ¼ VGA resolution driven by a Pentium processor with MMX technology. The unit includes a WAAS-GPS engine, a VHF navigation receiver capable of VOR/ LOC/GS navigation, and a VHF communications transceiver with 760 channels with 8 watts transmission power.

    Head Assembly must be replaced as an assembly. The GNS 480 Display Interface board contains the hardware and software that controls the GNS 480 head unit. It is self-contained and can run independently of the Pentium board. The Display Interface board has a 3x15 pin interface connector which mates with the Pentium board when the head unit is mounted to the main unit.

    The service technician is responsible for checking all service bulletins issued against the unit model being serviced. Refer to Service Bulletin List at the start of this manual and the Garmin AT web site. Software verification is not required because the software was tested during development. However, you must verify that the proper version of software is installed.

    Before disassembly, use Return To Service Procedure to examine the condition of the GNS 480 or to find the most probable cause of its malfunction. Do this to prevent disassembly that is not necessary. Do only those procedures of disassembly that are necessary to remove defective parts and to correct malfunc- tions.
