INSTALL OVERVIEW ELECTRICAL SAFETY The FX20 machine will be powered on and off at various points throughout the installation procedure. Do not open either the rear lower panel or the upper sided panels without explicit direction from Markforged. For your safety, at all other times follow proper lockout/tagout procedure to ensure that the printer is powered off.
Customer facilities will vary from site to site. If customer facilities do not meet the specifications outlined in the Facilities Guide, you must determine whether it is appropriate to continue with the installation. please contact Markforged Support immediately to discuss any deviations from specification, and to determine next steps before proceeding.

Before you begin, please ensure you have taken the following steps: Review the available safety information, and composite and support material safety data sheets. Perform a visual inspection of the FX20 machine, documenting any possible shipping damage. If any damage to the unit is visible, contact Markforged Support.
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE USING THE DIGITAL LEVEL Before arriving at the customer's site it is recommended you have calibrated your digital level. Do so by following the steps here: https://www.digipas.com/documents/dwl-1300-1500xy-manual.pdf Be sure to familiarize yourself with the features of this digital level before proceeding; this guide will refer to them throughout the leveling procedure.
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE FX20 LEVELING AND CORRECTION Before beginning this section, confirm that the machine is in the customer's intended final operating location, and that the location meets all Facilities Guide requirements and guidelines. Note: In this guide, "x-axis" means right-to-left, "y-axis" means front-to-back.
Page 11
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE Slide the panel backward to remove the panel from the mount. Place this panel aside where it won't be damaged. Repeat steps 1 and 2 on the opposite side for the side panel removal. The screw locations and placements are mirrored.
LEVEL THE PRINTER CHASSIS The FX20 has several points of adjustment to ensure that the machine is level and square in order to print accurately. The first stage of the leveling process ensures that your machine has been leveled to earth.
Page 13
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE Use the digital level to measure tilt in both X and Y direction, and note the value and direction of tilt along both axes. (See Using The Digital Level.) Begin the leveling process in the direction requiring the larger correction first. For example, if the X direction reads .120°...
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE LEVEL THE Y-RAILS Place the digital level on the z-stage mounts as shown. Note: This is not a large surface to rest the level on; you will have to hold the level steady and stable to obtain an accurate reading.
Page 15
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE Place the digital level on the right y-rail (Y0), at its frontmost position next to the flexure plates, with the v-groove sitting at the top dead center of the rail. (See photo below.) Ensure the leveling mode is reading on its long axis while on the rail.
Page 16
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE Place the level on the left-hand y-rail (Y1), then repeat steps 3-6, writing down the exact reading from the digital level on the Y1 rail line of the sign-off sheet.. Ensure that the digital level is reading the ALT zero established from the z-stage mount. Again, it is critical that you do not change orientations from measurement to measurement;...
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE LEVEL THE PRINT BED Note: Maintain the same alternate zero on the digital level from the Y-rail leveling procedure. Using a 5mm driver, fully tighten all four bed leveling screws by turning them clockwise. Loosen each screw 2.5 turns.
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE REINSTALL SHEET METAL PANELS Reinstall the rear sheet metal panel. Note: Never operate the printer with the rear panel removed, as the exposed moving z-stage presents a potential safety hazard. Reinstall the right and left lower sheet metal panels. At this point all sheet metal panels should be reinstalled.
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE SET THE ENCODER GAPS Before beginning the initial print run, it is critical to calibrate alignment and spacing of the encoder strips and sensors. After leveling, the sensors may collide with the encoder strips, in which case the strips must be adjusted in order to prevent damage.
Page 20
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE Apply downward pressure on the rail to increase the spacing between the encoder and strip. Repeat steps 3-5 on the opposite side. Move the gantry rail to the front of the machine. Tighten the front fine adjustment screw until the gap between the sensor and strip (labeled H on diagram below) is between 0.25mm and 0.75mm.
Page 21
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE X-AXIS ENCODER The X-axis encoder sensor is located behind the print head back plane. Gently move the X-axis through its full range of motion. If the encoder sensor contacts the encoder strip at any point during this movement, use a 2.5mm hex driver to loosen the three screws -- but do remove them.
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE CHECK & ADJUST BELT TENSION Motion system belt tension is set by the manufacturer but it's useful to confirm it at this time. We recommend using a dedicated sonic tension meter, particularly in a noisy environment, but a precise guitar tuner app will suffice.
INSTALL BUILD CHAMBER BULBS The FX20 build chamber is illuminated by two halogen bulbs. The bulb sockets are located on the inside front wall of the build chamber, to the left and right of the door. The bulbs are shipped uninstalled and packed inside the FX20 Accessory Kit.
INITIAL PRINT RUN DEVICE SETUP UTILITY The Device Setup Utility runs the first time you power on your FX20 printer. It will walk you through the following setup stages: Configure Network, Check for Updates, Set Time Zone, Gantry Skew, and Offset Calibration.
Page 25
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE CHECK FOR UpDATES SET TIME ZONE Tap Check for Updates to confirm your printer is Tap Set Time Zone and scroll through the list to running the most recent software version. find and select a time zone for your printer. Then, tap Save.
You perform a USB Reset while troubleshooting with Markforged Support. ● Markforged Support instructs you to recalibrate after certain hardware replacement procedures. Note: If the Chamber Temperature Calibration utility fails, contact your reseller for support. To run the utility, tap Calibration, tap Chamber Temperature Calibration, and then tap Continue.
GANTRY SKEW ADJUSTMENT The utility is designed to tune the gantry alignment and improve dimensional accuracy. Note: If your FX20 printer's Gantry Skew values are unable to be automatically compensated for, reference the Mechanical Gantry Squaring Procedure section. Launch the...
NOZZLE OFFSET UTILITY The XYZ Nozzle Offset utility is a test print that the FX20 uses to calculate the relative positions of all three print head nozzles. This utility will print three different parts and perform various touchoffs and sweeps on their surfaces.
SAFETY FIRST DANGER: The lid safety override tool overrides critical safety features required for safe operation of the FX20 printer. This tool is only to be used for the procedure outlined in this document. WARNING: This procedure is only to be executed by personnel directly trained by Markforged.
Page 30
FX20 INSTALL GUIDE PROCEDURE Note: The Mechanical Gantry Squaring procedure is not a required install step. Only complete this procedure if your printer's Gantry Skew values are unable to be automatically compensated for. Disconnect the printer from internet by disconnecting the ethernet cord from the Ethernet port on the lower rear panel.

FX20 INSTALL GUIDE Use the step stool to safely approach the top of the printer, and with the lid still open, tighten the two (2) screws that were previously loosened to in-lb. Once this is complete, step down and WARNING: away from the top of the machine.
