This manual describes the operation and precautions when using this product for those who have sufficient knowledge to evaluate the danger of lasers and carry out safety management. To use this product correctly, please read and understand this manual carefully before use.

SPA-100 OPERATION MANUAL 1. Safety Notes Intended use This product is a device for use in optical characteristic evaluation. Do not use for any purpose other than the above. Using the product in a manner not described in this operating manual may impair the protection provided by the device.

SPA-100 x1 USB cable x1 1 power cord BNC cable x1 Operating Instructions & Software x1 Certificate of Inspection x1 Make sure that there are no scratches or dirt on the product body and accessories.
3. Product outline and part names 3.1 Product Details The SPA-100 is combined with a tunable light source (TSL-570, 770, 550 or 710) manufactured by santec to create an OFDR (Optical Frequency Domain Reflectmetry) This product measures the reflection characteristics and transmission characteristics in optical fiber components and optical fiber system paths.

Optical Backreflection Meter SPA-100 4. Installation Operating Environment This product is a precision instrument and is used indoors. (Pollution degree 2) Do not install in the locations listed below. 1. Altitude 2000m or more 2. Places exposed to direct sunlight 3.
1. Connect the trigger out pin of the TSL (TSL-570 in the figure) to the trigger in terminal of the spa-100 with the attached BNC cable. 2. Connect the control computer to the SPA-100 using the supplied USB cable. 3. Connect the control computer and TSL with a GPIB cable (sold separately).
Figure 5-2 Front cable connection diagram Power-on, laser input Press the power switch on the lower left side of the front panel of the SPA-100. Lights amber when idle and green when energized. Refer to the instruction manual of the TSL to be used, turn on the power, and operate the laser output.

SPA-100 OPERATION MANUAL The "PORT1" and "PORT2" optical connectors on the front panel and the "POWER MONITOR" optical connectors on the rear panel output laser light of intensity and wavelength according to the laser source used. Take the same safety measures as the laser source used.
For information on installing the operating software, refer to Chapter 7. 6.1. Launching the Software Click on the file "santec SPA" on your desktop to run it. Measurement of Reflection Properties (Overview) This section describes the high-level steps required to measure reflection characteristics.

Right-click the mouse on the upper graph and select "Set Peak Threshold" from the menu that appears (Figure 6-14). A horizontal line will appear on the graph, so drag it with the mouse to set the threshold level.

Optical Backreflection Meter SPA-100 Alternatively, from "OFDR Settings", display the "Analysis Settings" tab, check "Peak Detection", and enter "Peak Threshold (dB)" and "Peak Width (mm)". Optical Backreflection Meter SPA-100 6.8. Calculation of return loss and insertion loss (using manual settings) 6.8.1. Set the range from the graph. This section explains the calculation of return loss (RL) and insertion loss (IL) in any region. This function sets the calculation area individually for any reflection point and calculates RL and IL.

If the distance between the peaks is far apart, stable measurement can be achieved by setting the region width to about 5 mm.

Setting the refractive index This section describes the initial refractive index settings and the ability to set the refractive index to any reflectance measurement range. Set using the upper graph. The default refractive index setting is the refractive index that applies to the entire measurement range.

SPA-100 OPERATION MANUAL In order to reduce the noise of the measurement data, in the operation of the upper graph, enlarge the area ± 5 mm near the peak and click the "Update Graph" button. This completes the measurement of the wavelength dependence of IL.
