3.4 Fuel System

3.4.1

Fuel Specifications

Use a clean, good-quality unleaded fuel with an octane
number of 87 or 89. Use fresh gasoline to ensure it is
blended for the season and to reduce the possibility of
the formation of gum deposits that could clog the fuel
system. Do not use gasoline left over from the previous
season.
Kohler Co. recommends unleaded fuel because it
leaves fewer combustion chamber deposits. Never mix
oil with fuel.
Consult
the
engine
recommendations regarding alcohol/gasoline blends.
3.4.2

Ball-Joint Lubrication

At the interval specified in the service schedule,
lubricate the ball-joint assembly using a light oil. See
Section 1 for the assembly's location.
3.4.3

Carburetor Adjustment

Obtain the correct carburetor adjustment when engine
compression and ignition meet specifications. Do not
adjust the carburetor to compensate for other engine
disorders.
Always check the condition of the backfire flame
arrestor before adjusting the carburetor. A dirty backfire
flame arrestor will adversely affect engine performance
and carburetor adjustment.
Note: Do
not
adjust
increase/decrease the engine speed (Hz).
The engine uses a fixed-jet carburetor with an electric
choke and fuel shutoff solenoid. The only adjustments
necessary are the idle speed mixture and the automatic
choke. The idle system functions only as the engine
comes up through idle range to governed speed. For
this reason, the idle system has only a momentary
effect. Normally, customers do not need to adjust the
carburetor. However, if the carburetor is removed or
tampered with, carburetor adjustment may be required
to obtain optimum engine performance. Customers
may need to make minor carburetor adjustments to
compensate for differences in altitude, fuel, and
temperature.

Carburetor Adjustment Procedure
1. With the engine stopped, turn the idle speed
mixture screw in (clockwise) until it seats lightly. Do
not force the screw! Turn the idle speed mixture
screw out 1 3/4 turns. See Figure 3-4.
Note: Throttle stop adjustment. Turn out the
throttle stop adjustment screw to prevent
interference with the governor/carburetor
throttle rod. Allow the throttle rod to travel
through the full range of motion to avoid
interfering with the governor's action. The
throttle stop screw should have no affect on
the engine's speed during adjustments and
operation.
2. Start the engine and let it run at no load for about
5 minutes. Before making adjustments, thoroughly
to
warm up the engine.
3. Adjust the carburetor idle speed mixture screw
±3/8 turn to achieve best stability results at no load.
4. Stop the generator set.
