Telephone
Line Connection.
A
modulator-demodulator
(modem)
is
required to
establish
telephone
line
connection.
Telephone companies
rent these
modems
(also
called
data
sets
or data phones).
There
are
a
number
of specialized
modems
available;
the
type
required
depends
upon
the
specific
needs
of
the
installation.
When
a
standard
interface
(021-01
1
1-00
Data
Communi-
cation
Interface)
is
installed
in
the Terminal, the plug
on
the
interface
card
must
be connected
so that the plug index
mark
aligns
with
the
"TO
MODEM"
index
mark on
the
card.
Then
the other
end
of the
interface cable
must
be
plugged
into
the
modem
set.
Signal
names
remain
as
listed
in
Table
2-4.
Once
connected
to
the
modem,
computer
connection
is
achieved
as
follows:
1)
Energize the
equipment;
2) Dial
the
number
of the
computer
installation; 3)
When
the
com-
puter
responds with an
audible tone, place the
telephone
headset
on
the
cradle
provided
on
the
modem;
or
push
the
button
marked
DATA,
and hang
up
the headset; or
perform
such other function
as
required
by
the
specific
modem
in
use; 4)
Perform
the sign-on procedure,
which
varies
with
the
computer
installation.
