Installation — Operation
8. The Bolens Gardener Tractor is shipped from
the factory partially knocked down. The wheels and
drawbar assembly are not attached to the tractor
but are strapped in the shipping crate. The tractor
handle assembly, cultivator guide handle and clutch
rods are shipped as a separate packaged unit. The
accessory bag, attached to the tractor, includes a
starter rope, grease gun and two chain guards. The
hub spacers and hub bolts are bolted on to the hub
and must be removed before attaching the wheels.
9. The Drawbar assembly should be attached first,
Figure 2. Remove upper drawbar roller and guide
handle brace from drawbar assembly. Remove pin
clip, washer and drawbar pin from main arch located
below bearing housing. Position the drawbar assem-
bly in the main arch and replace drawbar pin, washer
and pin clip. Reassemble the upper drawbar roller
and guide handle brace so that roller is on top of the
main frame.
10. Remove bolts in the slotted ends of the handle
support adjusting straps. Remove nuts and washers
from side bolts connecting main frame to the main
arch. Figure 3. Slide bolts back but do not remove.
Position the lower portion of the handle at this
point and reassemble washers and nuts, do not tighten
securely. Position adjusting straps so that the slots
are aligned with the handle support plates, insert
bolts with nuts and lock washers. Figure 2. Set
handle to desired height and tighten these nuts. Also
tighten the two nuts at front end of handle assembly.
11. Move the clutch release levers to the extreme
forward or engaged position and connect each clutch
rod clevis to the throwout levers with pins provided.
Figure 2. CORRECT ADJUSTMENT OF CONTROL
RODS IS ESSENTIAL TO PROPER CLUTCH PER-
FORMANCE. Refer to clutch adjustment in para-
graph 24.
12. The cultivator guide handle should then be a s -
sembled to the drawbar. Figures 1 and 2. Remove
the bolt and nut in the guide handle brace and also
remove the nuts from the two bolts directly in front
of the drawbar hinges. Position guide handle under-
neath brace and bolt into place to drawbar assembly.
Replace bolt and nut connecting guide handle and
guide handle brace.
13. Uncoil the throttle control cable and the stop
switch cable from the engine and attach along left
handle member with the three clips provided. Cable
and wire should be run over jackshaft and under
crossbar at top of handle assembly. Attach the
throttle control lever to the inside of the handle
through holes provided directly ahead of the handle
grip. Figure 1. The heads of the bolts should be on
the outside of the handle. Attach stop switch cable
to underside of stop switch assembly located on the
left handle. Make certain the embossment on the
fibre washers are centered into the holes on each
side of handle so bolt does not directly contact
handle. If bolt contacts handle the engine will be
shorted and will not start,
14. Remove hub bolts and large spacer from hubs
and attach wheels. One of the tires is liquid filled
and is to be attached to the right side of tractor. See
chart in paragraph 21 for proper tread settings.
15. Remove nuts and bolts from front of main arch.
Attach chain guards furnished in accessory bag and
replace nuts and bolts.
16. After the tractor has been assembled, check and
tighten all nuts and bolts. Check and inflate tires to
9 pounds for 4:00 x 12 tires and 6 pounds for 6-12
tires , paragraph 20.
