MD52A

4 DESCRIPTION

The MD52A Ship's Magnetic Compass Sensor is a Transmitting Heading Device (THD).
The MD52A is the sensing element of a MARINE DATA™ Transmitting Magnetic
Compass System (TMC).
A TMC offers a complete alternative to the gyrocompass. Variation and Deviation is
corrected to give True Heading. In addition, a TMC can operate all MARINE DATA
compass repeaters and navigational equipment, providing added safety at sea through
multiple redundancy.
A TMC is a cost effective, easy to install system which transmits accurate Heading
information from a ship's magnetic compass to a compass repeater at another location
on the vessel. The MD52A compass sensor can either be mounted to an existing ship's
magnetic compass installation in its binnacle or to a magnetic compass supplied as part
of the complete TMC system. An off-course alarm, when installed as an integral part of
the TMC system, provides an early warning of navigational errors.
The MD52A Ship's Magnetic Compass Sensor is mounted concentrically on (or under)
a conventionally gimballed ship's magnetic compass using either the MD54 Compass
Sensor Adhesive Mount or the MD58 Compass Sensor Bracket Mount, depending on
the design of the host compass. The MD52A has an internal magnetic fluxgate coil
which accurately senses the orientation of the ship's compass card. The orientation is
transmitted to the MARINE DATA MD97 Compass Sensor Interface where it is
transformed into NMEA 0183 Heading data. The Heading data can be transmitted
onward to Compass Repeaters and other navigation equipment which requires Heading
data.
Alternatively the MD52A can be used simply to drive a Compass Repeater at the
steering position; this will display the ship's heading to within one degree and avoids the
installation of a reflector to the compass binnacle. Installation is therefore simple and
cost effective.
The MD52A is available with a 5-way Triad™ type connector (variant MD52AT, product
F052003) or a 5-way XLR type connector (variant MD52AX, product F052001).
Constructed in a robust black acetal case, the MD52A is designed to complement
existing marine navigation equipment. Together with the mounting options of the MD54
Compass Sensor Adhesive Mount and the MD58 Compass Sensor Bracket Mount, the
MD52A offers a highly flexible compass sensor solution.

easy to install and simple to maintain.
