Airbag monitoring
indicator light
Two separate indicators monitor the function
of the Advanced Airbag System: the airbag
monitoring indicator light and the
PASSEN-
GER AIR BAG OFF
light.
The Advanced Airbag System (includ ing the
electronic control unit, sensor circuits and sys-
tem wiring) is monit ored cont inuously to
make sure that it is functioni ng properly
whenever the ignit ion is on. Each t ime you
turn on the igni t ion, the airbag mon itoring in-
dicator light
I
will come on f or a few seconds
(self di agnost ics).
The system must be inspected when the
indicator light
I :
- does not come on when t he ignit ion is
switc hed on,
- does not go out a few seconds afte r you
have switc hed on the ign ition, or
- comes on wh ile driving .
If an airbag system malfunct ion is detected,
the ind icator light will first start flash ing to
catch the driver's attention and t hen stay on
continuously to serve as a constant reminde r
to have the system inspected immediately.
If a malfunction occurs that turns the front
airbag on the passenger side off, the
PASSEN-
GER AIR BAG OFF
light w ill come on and stay
on w henever the ign ition is on.

WARNING
An air bag system t hat is not funct ion ing
prope rly cannot provide supplemen tal pro-
t ection in a fr ont al crash.
- If
the air bag indic at or li ght comes on, it
means that there may be somet hing
wron g wit h the Advanced Airbag System.
It is possible t hat the air bag will inflate
when it is not supposed to, or w ill not in-
flate when it should.
-
- Have the airbag system inspected imme-
diate ly by yo ur autho rized Audi dealer.

The
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light is located
in t he center of the inst rument panel
<=> fig . 123.
The
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light wi ll come
on and stay on to tell you w hen the front Ad-
vanced Airbag on the passenger side has been
turned off by the electro nic contro l unit. Each
t ime you turn on the igni ti on, the
PASSEN-
GER AIR BAG OFF
light will flas h for a few
seconds and:
- w ill stay on if the fro nt passenger seat is not
occupied,
- w ill stay on if the re is a small child or child
restrai nt on the front passenger seat,
- w ill go out if the front passenger seat is oc-
cupied by an adult as registered by t he
weight-sens ing mat.
The
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light must
come on and stay on
if the ignition is on and
- a car bed has been installed on the front
seat, or
- a rearward-facing child rest raint has been
installed on the front passenger seat, or
- a forwar d-fac ing child restra int has been in-
stalled on the front passenger seat, or
- t he weight registe red on t he fr ont passen-
ger seat is equal to or less t han the com-
bined weig ht of a typical 1 year-old restra in-
ed in one of the rear-facing or forward-fac-
ing infant restra ints listed in Federal Motor
