Operating Principle
Regulation respecting waste water
In Québec, the wastewater systems of isolated dwellings must respect the
disposal systems for isolated dwellings (Q-2, r.22).
These systems treat wastewater to return it to the environment
without endangering the public's health or the environment. There are three treatment levels: primary treatment,
secondary or advanced secondary treatment and tertiary treatment.
Primary treatment
The primary treatment system consists of a septic tank. The septic tank clarifies wastewater by letting suspended
solids settle to the bottom and retaining floating matter to avoid clogging of the secondary or advanced secondary
treatment system. Every septic tank must comply with NQ Standard 3680-905 and must be equipped with an
effluent filter certified under the same standard.
For more information on the operation, operating guidelines, maintenance and warranties of PTA's septic tanks and
effluent filters, please refer to these products' Owner's Manuals.
Secondary or advanced secondary treatment
®
When the primary treatment is completed, the wastewater from the septic tank flows into the Ecoflo
Biofilter. Once
in the biofilter, the water flows into a tipping bucket that spreads it alternately on the distribution plates installed on
both sides of the central support. The wastewater then trickles through the natural filter media. Finally, the treated
®
wastewater is discharged into the environment, whether by infiltration directly under the Ecoflo
Biofilter, in a
absorption bed, in a watercourse provided certain conditions are met, or using a tertiary treatment system when
required.
®
The Ecoflo
Biofilter is certified under NQ Standard 3680-910 and is an advanced secondary level treatment
(Class III).
®
The Ecoflo
Biofilter's operating principle allows the system to be used continuously or intermittently without
requiring any special precautions (see Operating Guidelines) or having any impact on the quality of the treatment.
No action is required from the owner to start the system.
®
The number of Ecoflo
Biofilters is determined by the number of bedrooms in a home or, for any other type of
building, by the total domestic wastewater flow per day. The model used depends on the available surface area,
the topography of the lot, as well as the type, permeability and depth of the natural soil on the site.
Tertiary treatment
®
When required, the Ecoflo
Biofilter can be combined with a PTA disinfection filter (FDi) or UV disinfection unit
(DiUV) to reduce pathogen concentrations.
The FDi and DiUV are certified under NQ Standard 3680-910 and are tertiary level treatments with disinfection
(Class V).
For more information on the operation, operating guidelines, maintenance, and warranties of PTA's FDi or DiUV,
please refer to these products' Owner's Manuals.
