EMS node
The utility node is a management server that is required for each IBM Storage Scale System of one
or more building blocks. The EMS node also serves as a third IBM Storage Scale quorum node in a
configuration with one building block.
The minimum release level on the utility node is ESS 6.1.8.
Note: EMS nodes come with a default of 128 GB of memory. A maximum of two building blocks may be
deployed with this minimum memory configuration. Higher levels of memory remove this building block
restriction.
Protocol node
The utility node dual-socket server is used as a protocol node. This utility node supports the SMB and NFS
protocols. A minimum of two protocol nodes is required if CES is needed, and protocol nodes must be
deployed from an EMS utility node.
System management
An EMS node in a utility node cluster provides system management functions. Both utility node GUI and
call home run on the EMS nodes and provide management and health monitoring capabilities. The EMS
node also runs a container with Ansible playbook that can provide orchestration of complex tasks, such as
cluster configuration, file system creation, and code update.

Power supply units (PSUs)

Power supply units are subcomponents of the server. A PSU takes electrical power from the power
distribution units (PDUs) of the rack and distributes the power to other components in the server.
For redundancy, two PSUs are installed in the system.
Note: The base system may be shipped without the power supply. Users must install the original or same
model of power supplies; FSP Group Inc, FSP2000-20HM is to be used with the utility node (MTM 5149 -
23E) to be able to operate it.

IBM Storage Scale System Utility Node with single socket is an EMS node in the basic configuration. The
EMS node acts as the management server and provides infrastructure for hardware monitoring and hosts
a GUI.
The EMS server has the following roles:
