Installing a drive To install an internal drive, follow these steps: 1. Remove the cover. See “Removing the cover” on page 10. 2. If your computer has a CD drive or DVD drive, you might need to remove the signal and power cables from the drive. 3.

6. Install the drive into the bay. Align the screw holes and install two screws to secure the drive. 7. Each integrated drive electronics (IDE) drive requires two cables; a four-wire power cable that connects to the power supply and a signal cable that connects to the system board.

Administrator password Setting an administrator password deters unauthorized persons from changing configuration settings. If you are responsible for maintaining the settings of several computers, you might want to set an administrator password. After you set an administrator password, a password prompt is displayed each time you try to access the Configuration/Setup Utility program.
The startup sequence Your computer can be started from several devices, including the hard disk drive, diskette drive, and CD drive or DVD drive, or from the network. The startup program looks for these devices in a specified sequence and starts the computer from the first device in the sequence that contains startable media or code.
POST, BIOS, and the Configuration/Setup Utility program by starting your computer using a flash update diskette. IBM might make changes and enhancements to the system programs. When updates are released, they are available as downloadable files on the World Wide Web (see the Quick Reference).
