Belt Replacement
Before performing any type of maintenance on the machine, wait for all
parts to stop moving and disconnect the spark plug wire. Failure to follow
this instruction could result in personal injury or property damage.
If the drive belt needs to be replaced, make sure you use only a factory authorized
belt listed in the Parts pages of this operator's manual, as an "over- the-counter"
belt may not perform satisfactorily. The procedure requires average mechanical
ability and commonly available tools.
To replace the Drive belt, follow these steps:
1. Remove the belt cover from the left side of the tiller by removing the two self
tapping screws and hex stop nut and washer. See Figure 27.
2. Remove the idler pulley bolt and move the belt from under the idler pulley
keeper. See Figure 28.

3. Remove the belt keeper assembly located behind the engine pulley by
removing the two hex bolts and lock washers. See Figure 28.
4. Remove the old belt from around the transmission pulley and install the new
belt. See Figure 28.
5. Follow the instructions in reverse order to re-install the belt keeper and idler
pulley.
NOTE: Upon reassembly, make certain that the idler pulley keeper is as
shown in Figure 27. Take note of the notch on the bottom of the keeper and
the alignment when reassembling with the replacement belt.
NOTE; After re-installing the belt, double-check the cable adjustment. Refer
to the Assembly section for instructions on adjusting the cable.
Tines
The tines will wear with use and should be inspected at the beginning of each tilling
season and after every 30 operating hours. The tines can be replaced.
Tine Inspection
With use, the tines will become shorter, narrower and pointed. Badly worn tines will
result in a loss of tilling depth, and reduced effectiveness when chopping up and
turning under organic matter.
Removing/Installing a Tine Assembly
1. A tine assembly consists of a left hand tine and a right hand tine.
NOTE: The sharp edges of the tines are positioned to enter the soil first when
rotating. Note this position of the tines for reinstallation of the new tine
assemblies.
2. To remove a tine assembly, simply remove the cotter pin securing the clevis
pin for each tine. See Figure 29.

3. Remove the clevis pin for each tine, and slide the assembly to the outside of
the unit and off of the tine shaft.
4. Before reinstalling the tine assembly, inspect the tine shaft for rust, rough spots or
burrs. Lightly file or sand, as needed. Apply a thin coat of grease to the shaft.
5. Install each tine of the assembly so that the cutting (sharp) edge of the tines
will enter the soil first when the tiller moves forward.
