Remove all packaging from the sandwich toaster and the toasting surfaces. Retain the packaging.
If you dispose of it please do so according to any recycling regulations.
Check that the mains voltage on the rating plate under the appliance corresponds with the mains voltage in your area. If items are incorrect, missing or damaged, contact your nearest Tesco store for assistance.
When switched on for the first time the sandwich toaster may emit a small amount of vapour and light smoke - this is normal - the manufacturing process includes the use of oils. The vapour will burn off safely within a few minutes.
Using the appliance for the first time:
Open the sandwich toaster with the upper handle after lifting open the safety catch.
Wipe the upper and lower toasting plates with a damp cloth containing a trace of dilute detergent. Remove all traces of detergent with a cloth damped with clean water. Dry the toasting surfaces thoroughly.
Brush a very small amount of oil carefully over the toasting plates, making sure to cover the entire surface.
Do this for the first time only. It is unnecessary to repeat this operation.
This operation must be performed before you begin the toasting process.
After a few minutes the correct operating temperature will be reached and the green temperature light will come on.
The toaster is now ready for use.
Whenever the toaster is connected to a live mains outlet it will be powered and the toasting surfaces will be hot.
During operation, the temperature light will go 'ON' and 'OFF'. This indicates that the unit is functioning correctly.
Cut slices of bread of sufficient size, so they do not overlap the edges of the toasting plates.
For golden toasted sandwiches we recommend lightly buttering the outside of the bread, i.e. the filling is placed between the plain sides of the bread.
If you wish to butter the insides of the bread in the normal way, you may find that after toasting a number of sandwiches, the indents (scallops) in the toaster plates may need to be re-oiled with margarine, butter or cooking oil.
Prepare one or two sandwiches, place them on the lower toasting plate and gently but firmly close the lid and click the catch into place.
If the filling is too thick, open the toaster and remove the excess. DO NOT FORCE THE LID DOWN.
Allow the sandwich to toast for approximately two minutes.
When the sandwiches are toasted open the appliance handles and remove the sandwiches.
Toasting time will be a matter of taste. Your sandwich toaster will toast both sides of the sandwiches at once and will seal in the flavour. With "hard" fillings, stringy bread, or very thick sandwiches, you may have to cut them apart.
While the scallops are coated with a non stick coating, some fillings may melt and cause the sandwiches to adhere to the scallops. To free the sandwiches, use a heatproof plastic or wooden spatula.
NEVER USE A SHARP OBJECT SUCH AS A KNIFE OR STEEL SPATULA. THIS WILL DAMAGE THE NONSTICK COATING.
During use the toaster plates get very hot, and should be treated with extreme caution.
During use the surface will get hot.
USE OVEN GLOVES IF YOU NEED TO MOVE THE APPLIANCE.
Always preheat your sandwich toaster.
Always butter the outsides of the bread slices.
We recommend the use of natural hard cheeses, such as Cheddar. Avoid using processed cheeses as they tend to "run" under high temperatures.
A small amount of sugar sprinkled on the buttered sides makes the toasted sandwiches crispier.
Switch off the unit at the power outlet.
Remove the plug from the power outlet and allow the sandwich toaster to cool down completely.
INSIDE: Wipe the scallops and cutters with a clean absorbent cloth, or a length of kitchen roll.
OUTSIDE: Wipe with a soft cloth which has been rinsed almost dry in warm soapy water, and dry with a soft cloth.
DO NOT use abrasive chemicals steel wool, scouring pads or abrasive pads on either the inside or outside of the sandwich toaster.
After all the components have been cleaned and dried, stow the sandwich maker safely out of direct sunlight and out of the reach of children.
Use brown, whole wheat, white or rye bread suitable to the size of the Sandwich Toaster.
Butter one side of the bread only with a thin layer of butter or spread.
