Introduction

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

  • Always use a new alkaline 9V battery with an extended expiration date at least 3 years beyond the current date. Connect the battery to the clip and match the direction to the image inside of the battery cavity. Be sure not to pull on wires when disconnecting an old battery.
  • This device is recommended for interior use only.
  • If the device is used in a manner not specified here, the protection provided by the device may be impaired.
  • No part of this device may be replaced or repaired by anyone except the manufacturer.

Overview

Overview

*The Sensing Contacts extend down the side and onto the bottom of the detector.

The Leak Alert™+ electronic water detector is a self-contained, battery-powered unit designed to minimize water damage by alerting you to a potential water leak.

Two external metal strips (the Sensing Contacts) each carry a mild electrical current. If both strips get wet–from a plumbing leak, a flood, or surrounding moisture condensing on the surface, the detector will activate and sound a 90 dB alarm and the LEDs will start to flash.

In the event of a flood, the detector will float on top of the water, and will continue to signal for up to 72 hours.

INSTALL BATTERY

  1. Insert a coin as shown. Twist coin to release cover. (Figure A)
    INSTALL BATTERY - Step 1
  2. Connect a new alkaline 9V battery with an extended expiration date at least 3 years beyond the current date. Be sure not to pull on wires when disconnecting an old battery. (Figure B)
    INSTALL BATTERY - Step 2
  3. Position the battery as shown, as far into the cavity as possible. (Figure C)
    INSTALL BATTERY - Step 3
  4. Close cover securely.

TEST DETECTOR

Whenever you install a new battery, test the detector to ensure that it works properly.

  1. Wet your fingers and touch both Sensing Contacts. (Figure D)
    TEST DETECTOR
  2. A loud, repetitive beep will sound and the LEDs will flash red.
  3. To stop the alarm, wipe the Sensing Contacts with a clean, dry cloth.

POSITION THE DETECTOR

The Leak Alert + electronic water detector can be used wherever there is a potential risk for flooding.

Common usage areas include sinks, toilets, water heaters, washing machines, aquariums, or sump pumps. You can also use it in more general areas, such as basements or garages.

  1. Place the detector as shown (Figure E), with Sensing Contacts touching the floor.
    CORRECT POSITION THE DETECTOR
  2. The detector will be unable to detect water if Contacts are up. (Figure F)
    WRONG POSITION THE DETECTOR

NOTE:
When possible, avoid placing the Leak Alert
+ directly under potential leaking point (for example, directly under the toilet supply hose). Instead, the detector's Sensing Contacts on the bottom of the unit should be able to come into contact with the water leakage.

IF FLOODING OCCURS

In the event that an area floods, the detector will float, and the alarm will sound for the life of the battery, up to 72 hours. (Figure G)
IF FLOODING OCCURS

LOW BATTERY WARNING

In the event of low battery, water detector will chirp (short beep every five seconds). Immediately replace the battery with a new 9V alkaline battery with a valid extended expiration date of at least 3 years beyond the current date.
REPLACE BATTERY AND RETEST UNIT ANNUALLY.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS

SITUATION LIKELY CAUSE SOLUTION
False alarm sounds. Battery charge is low. Change the battery.
Water detector is on a conductive surface, such as metal. Place a thin piece of paper or plastic between detector and conductive surface.
Ambient moisture has collected on the Sensing Contacts. Wipe Sensing Contacts dry.
Detector does not sound alarm even when touching water. Detector is positioned in a way that water does not touch Sensing Contacts. Reposition the detector so Sensing Contacts are flat against the surface where water leakage might occur.
Battery is dead. Install a new 9V alkaline battery with an extended expiration date.
Detector does not float. Battery is not placed correctly in the battery cavity. Position the battery per the battery installation instructions in this document.
