Operating safety

G
WARNING
If you do not have the prescribed service/
maintenance work or necessary repairs car-
ried out, this could result in malfunctions or
system failures. There is a risk of an accident.
Always have the prescribed service/mainte-
nance work as well as necessary repairs car-
ried out at a qualified specialist workshop.
The operating safety of an engine system
depends on its professional installation in the
overall system (vehicle). As the driver, you also
affect the safe operation of the engine.
Through compliance with the prescribed main-
tenance intervals, you fulfil part of the require-
ments for safe operation of the engine.
However, safe operation of the engine also
depends upon its proper use and care. This
includes, for example, regularly checking the oil
level.

Safety measures

Damage to the engine can also lead to personal
injury. In order to avoid engine damage, the fol-
lowing safety precautions must be adhered to.
Only start the engine with the batteries
R
firmly connected.
Do not disconnect the batteries when the
R
engine is running.
Do not use a super charger to start the
R
engine.
Carry out jump-starting with separate bat-
R
teries only.
Take note that the battery cable terminals
R
must be removed before super charging
the batteries.
Please note that the "+" and "-" terminals on
R
the batteries must be disconnected when
carrying out electric welding work.
The control unit connectors may only be
R
connected/disconnected when the electri-
cal system is switched off.
Incorrect control unit-power supply polarity
R
(e.g. by connecting up the batteries incor-

rectly) can cause irreparable damage to the
control units.
Tighten diesel injection system connec-
R
tions to the prescribed tightening torque.
When drying paintwork, do not exceed a
R
temperature of 80 † (e.g. in the drying
oven) as this can cause damage to the
engine control unit.
Only use the appropriate testing probes
R
when taking measurements from electrical
connectors (e.g. a Mercedes-Benz connec-
tion set). Telephones and two-way radio
devices that are not connected to an exter-
nal aerial can cause malfunctions in the
electronics and thus endanger the operat-
ing safety of the engine.
Warning stickers
If you remove any warning stickers, you or oth-
ers could fail to recognise certain dangers.
Various warning stickers are attached to the
engine system. Their purpose is to make you and
others aware of various risks.
Notes on electronic systems
Important safety notes
G
WARNING
Modifications to electronic components, their
software as well as wiring could affect their
function and/or the operation of other net-
worked components. This could in particular
also be the case for systems relevant to
safety. They might not function properly any-
more and/or jeopardise the operational
safety of the vehicle. There is an increased
risk of an accident and injury.
Do not attempt to modify the wiring as well as
electronic components or their software.
Always have work on electrical and electronic
components carried out at a qualified special-
ist workshop.
The general operating permit for your vehicle
could be rendered invalid If you carry out mod-
ifications to electronic components, their soft-
ware or wiring.
