    12.6 Vdc for battery backup. The battery is a 12 Amp Hour battery and will operate the RAD-8LS for a minimum of 75 hours during an AC failure. Slide switches and LEDs on the front panel allow the operator to view Alarm and trouble information and provide access to field programmable functions for the RAD-8LS.

  • Page 16: Selecting Proper Box Mounting Location

    It is recommended that the desired location first be tested with a known working RAD-8LS box by holding the box in the desired location and sending a test transmission to the receiving location. If the signal strength is adequate at the receiving location, then the selected mounting location is good.

    RAD-8LS. Do not connect field wiring until the panel has been fully tested beforehand. Tag all wiring for later connection to the unit. Follow the procedures outlined in Section 3, System Initialization.

    3 SYSTEM INITIALIZATION GENERAL For initial set-up of the RAD-8LS, the following instructions should be carried out in the order in which they appear. However, if during the operation of the unit it should become necessary to set the time on the internal clock this can be done without going through the power-up sequence.

    4 PROGRAMMING The RAD-8LS is fully field programmable. No special programming tools are required. The programming information for the RAD-8LS is stored in an Electrically Erasable Prom. The information stored on this chip is retained even in the event of loss of power.

    After programming all 11 zones, press “TEST” to save all tones and return to function selection mode. Function 2 is not used if the Digitize 99 Zone or King Fisher IRAC radio format are selected. Function 2 pertains to the Eagle Signal or King Fisher Radio Format only.

    RAD-8LS INSTALLATION AND USER MANUAL SW3 is applicable only if the panel is programmed to use the Digitize 99 Zone Format. See Function 5. Selecting this setting will cause the panel to report an “AC Power Fail” condition at the time the failure occurs. If this setting remains OFF the AC Power Fail condition will be reported after a variable delay to prevent a collision with other panels trying to report the failure at the same time.

    King Fisher radio formats. Place SW5 in the up position to select two function tones. Place in the down position for one function tone. SW6 is a Test Mode for the Rad-8LS. In order for the Rad-8LS to function correctly, this option should always be turned off. When this Test mode is enabled, the Rad-8LS will display the tones transmitted from the panel on the Trouble Leds.

    RAD-8LS INSTALLATION AND USER MANUAL 4.1.10 SETTING TIME INTERVAL BETWEEN TEST TRANSMISSIONS (FUNCTION 9 Refer to Section 4.1.18 Quick Program Daily Test to bypass this step. Function 9 programs the time interval between Daily Test transmissions. If function 8 is set to 01:00 (1 AM) and Function 9 is set to 02:00, then the next Daily Test will occur at 1:00 AM and repeat every two hours (3:00 AM, 5:00 AM, etc...).

    The tones for a Low Battery on this format are programmable. This feature is very seldom utilized on the Rad-8LS. The two tones are represented in binary form as two 4 bit nibbles. The default for Low battery is a 46 (tone 4 and tone 6).

    5 THEORY OF OPERATION ALARM INPUT The RAD-8LS contains eight separate alarm input channels. A red alarm LED and a yellow trouble LED are included for each zone. MICROPROCESSOR The RAD-8LS is a microprocessor based unit and contains a reusable EPROM to store the program and operating data.

    The AM transmitter is crystal controlled and employs amplitude modulation with feedback circuitry. The interface used is the Tone Control Board. The Tone Control Board interface is plugged into the main board of the RAD-8LS. The antenna is plugged into the transmitter using the connector marked “ANT”.

    BYPASS - If a zone is bypassed, the associated yellow trouble LED for that zone will flash. GROUND FAULT - If the RAD-8LS detects a Ground Fault on zone inputs, all of the yellow zone trouble LEDs will flash.
  • Page 42: Standby Power Operation

    Standby Power Operation is also indicated by a flashing POWER LED. When a low battery condition is detected, the RAD-8LS will transmit this to the receiving console during a daily test transmission or whenever a radio transmission is made (determined by the radio format selected).

    Using the table below, test all alarm and trouble initiating devices for each zone. Test each zone bypass switch by pushing switch to the “BYPASS” position and actuate an alarm. If working properly, the LED should light red indicating an alarm but the RAD-8LS should not transmit the alarm.

If the jumper is inserted correctly, the “COMM LINK” LED and all of the alarm LEDs will illuminate. The radio transmitter is now transmitting carrier.
