Getting Started with Your NOOK HDs Before getting into the details of using your NOOK HD+ or NOOK HD, take a look at some of the basics: gestures, setup, and basic navigation. With these basics in place, you can then discover all the other incredible things your NOOK HD+ or NOOK HD can do.

You need to agree to the terms of service. Tap the check box for Yes, I Accept the NOOK Terms of Service and tap Agree. After this, you land at the Do You Have a NOOK Account screen. If you have an existing B&N account, tap Yes, I Have an Account and enter your account information.

Orienting Yourself to Your NOOK The Welcome Back Screen After you set up your NOOK, whenever it goes to sleep or powers off, whenever you wake it up or power it back on, you must unlock it. This occurs on the Welcome Back screen.

Status bar: This is the top of the screen. You see whatever you name your NOOK (Patrick’s NOOK in Figure 1.4). Also, you see notifications in the middle of the screen. On the right side, you see the current time, Wi-Fi con- nectivity, settings (the gear icon), and battery monitor.

Your NOOK can connect to Wi-Fi networks other than the one you initially set up. B&N offers free Wi-Fi access in all B&N stores. If you take your NOOK to a B&N store, it can automatically connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot in that store.

If you don’t know this information, ask the person who set up the Wi-Fi network. Your NOOK can connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot that requires you to browse to a web page to authenticate yourself. For example, many hotel Wi-Fi hotspots require you to enter a room number or other information to connect.

Charging and Caring for Your NOOK’s Battery Your NOOK uses a high-tech battery called a lithium polymer battery. You can charge your NOOK’s battery either by plugging your NOOK into your computer’s USB port or by plugging your NOOK into a wall outlet using the supplied AC adapter.

B&N Customer Service. When You Are Not Reading When you finish reading, you should let your NOOK go to sleep instead of turning it off. You can force the NOOK to sleep by pressing and quickly letting go of the Power button.

Your NOOK’s Controls The Power Button The Power button is the sole button on the top-right side of the NOOK. In addition to powering your NOOK on and off, the Power button can wake your NOOK when it’s sleeping or put it to sleep when you finish reading.

Customizing and Configuring Your NOOK HDs Your NOOK has many features that enable you to easily customize it and make it your own. There are also many settings that control how your NOOK operates. In this chapter, you examine how to customize and configure your NOOK.

Live Wallpapers are images that change over time (some quickly, some slowly). You can purchase Live Wallpapers from B&N—just type Live Wallpapers in the search box (see Chapter 13, “Shopping and Visiting B&N on Your NOOK HDs”). You can place images you want to use for wallpaper in the Wallpaper folder on your NOOK. (Plug your NOOK into your computer and navigate to that folder.) Because the Gallery displays every JPG, GIF, and PNG file on your NOOK, including cover images, the Gallery list can quickly become lengthy.

Set Wallpaper. Should You Use a Specific File Format for Images? Your NOOK supports JPEG, GIF, and PNG files. For images, using either JPEG or PNG is your best option. GIF isn’t a good option for photographs, but if your image is line art or text, GIF can work fine.

Wi-Fi: Turn off or on Wi-Fi, and change which Wi-Fi you are connected to. See Chapter 1, “Getting Started with Your NOOK HDs,” for more informa- tion about Wi-Fi networks. Airplane Mode: Turn this on to turn off Wi-Fi functionality quickly. Turn this off to allow the NOOK to connect to Wi-Fi networks.

Bluetooth is Off by default. You can turn it on here. When you turn it on, you are taken to a new screen (see Figure 2.6), and you see a search begin. Your NOOK is looking for Bluetooth capable devices.

If you set the sleep timer to a time interval that is shorter than the amount of time it takes you to read a page on the reading screen, your NOOK goes into sleep mode while you are reading. So, be sure you set the interval appropriately for your reading speed.

NOTE: Forgot your passcode? The good news is that you can get your NOOK back. The bad news is that you have to reset your NOOK to factory settings, which means you lose all content you placed on your device.

Your NOOK’s Settings Select Date Format: This enables you to choose how you want the day, month, and year to appear. Notifications: If you don’t want to receive notifications when email arrives, a friend is offering a LendMe book, and so on, turn this option off.

Customize by Showing Only These Content Types. Turn off (that is, remove the check mark) for those items you don’t want to appear in the Active Shelf. Documents are documents and files you have added to the NOOK outside of purchasing at the NOOK Store ™ .

Your NOOK’s Settings Reply All: If Reply All is selected, when you click reply to a message, everyone who was on the original email is added to your reply. That said, so far I haven’t seen this setting have any effect yet. When you click Reply Now, you get all reply options, including Reply and Reply All.

Check for New Messages button (see Chapter 9). The more often you check, the more power (albeit not that much) your NOOK uses. If you are an email junkie, you may opt for the lower settings, but if you don’t get a lot of emails or you don’t like distracting notifications, you may opt for the higher values.

You’ll be asked to confirm the deletion, so either tap Cancel or OK. If you tap OK, the account will be deleted from the NOOK. You can always re-add it by tapping Add Account.

Your NOOK’s Settings began with D. Clearing your search history basically tells the NOOK to forget all the calendar searches you have made. The Reminder Settings category has a variety of information associated with how your NOOK reminds you that meetings are upcoming. Notifications can be turned on or off.

When you tap this, you are provided a number of options depending on what apps you have installed. In Figure 2.13, the options are to share the contacts with Dropbox or Evernote (two apps the author installed) or via email.
