XIO FAMILY OF SPECTRUM SYSTEM REMOTE INPUT/OUTPUT DEVICES
Preparing wiring for terminal blocks:
1. Strip 1/2 in. (13 mm) from wires to be attached at
one terminal.
1/2 (13)
Fig. 13.
2. Cut a single wire to 3/16 in. (5 mm). Insert the wire in
the required terminal location and tighten the screw.
3. If two or more wires are being inserted into one ter-
minal location, twist the wires together a minimum
of three turns before inserting them.
Fig. 14.
4. Cut the twisted end of the wires to 3/16 in. (5 mm)
before inserting them into the terminal and tighten-
ing the screw.
Fig. 15.
5. Pull on each wire in all terminals to check for good
mechanical connection.

Spectrum Network Wiring

A two-conductor shielded cable (see Table 8) should be
used to make the Master/Slave Network Communications
connections from the Novar Spectrum Executive
Controller or Spectrum Refrigeration Controller to the
terminals on the left side of the XIO device.
The network should originate from the main Novar
Spectrum Executive Controller or Spectrum Refrigeration
Controller and connect to the XIO device with the supplied
5 position terminal block. Multiple devices can be
connected via daisy chain wiring or bussed devices. Stubs
or branches off the network are not allowed.
In order to guarantee the network performance of each
segment, the network segments from the Novar Spectrum
Executive Controller or Spectrum Refrigeration Controller
should contain only XIO device modules, such as legacy
Novar Spectrum modules.
NOTES:
Bussed installation of XIO Remote I/O is lim-
ited to a maximum of five (5) modules
The baud rate is fixed at 9600 baud for all
devices other than the XIO-8IM-S and XIO-
CIM-S models, which allow selection of both
9600 and 1800 baud communications.
Do not exceed the maximum recommended
length (1200 M/4000 ft.) for any segment.
Setting MAC Address and Mode
Select Switches
Every XIO device comes from the factory set to a MAC
address of 0. Each controller must be assigned a unique
MAC address in order for the Novar Spectrum Executive
Controller to identify and communicate with it.
Addresses can range from 1 to 63 for XIO-8IM-S and XIO-
CIM-S models. The remaining Spectrum XIO models apply
the address switch setting to a base address unique to
each model type. Each model has a specific set of
switches dedicated to setting address offsets.
NOTE: Address zero (0) cannot be used for controllers.
Users must set the unique MAC address and device
options (where applicable) for the XIO device using the (8)
DIP switches on the front of the module.
To set the MAC address of an XIO device using the DIP
switches:
1. Find an unused address on the network to which the
controller connects, keeping in mind the usable
address range unique to the module type.
2. Locate the DIP switch bank on the front of the con-
troller that is labeled MAC Address.
3. For the XIO-8IM-S and XIO-CIM-S models:
with the device powered down, set the first 6 DIP
switches for the desired address. Add the value of
each of the DIP switches set to OFF (down) position
to determine the final MAC address (see Table 5). Set
the operating mode with switch #8 and the baud
rate with switch #7.
For all other XIO models:
with the device powered down, set the first 2 or 3 DIP
switches for the desired address offset. Add the
