And now, let's communicate!!

Turning on

Rotate the ON/OFFVOLUME [1] knob clockwise to turn the unit on. The radio beeps 4 successive times with different tones (may be inhibited). The LCD [3] displays a "self-test" message for 1 second, it will then indicate channel 1.

Volume adjustment

To adjust the volume level, hold "MON" [10] button down while rotating the ON-OFF/VOLUME [1] knob until you reach a comfortable listening level. Rotate it clockwise to increase and anti-clockwise to decrease the volume. Release the "MON" [10] button. Now your Alan 441 is ready to receive and transmit.

Channel selection

Select the desired channel and relevant frequency by the UP/DOWN [6] controls.

Background noise reduction (Autosquelch)

In your ALAN 441 the background noise reduction device (squelch) is activated by default. Hold MON [10] button down to deactivate it. In this way, even low level signals can be received.

Automatic power save

ALAN 441 is supplied with an automatic current economy circuit. If the transceiver receives no signal for 7 seconds or longer the "power save function" automatically activates. ("SAVE" blinks on the display). The battery life may increase by up to 50%.

When the batteries are in need of charging, icon will be displayed [3]: it is necessary to replace the alkaline batteries or recharge the Ni-Cd/NiMH ones.

Jack MIC/CHG

External charger jack [13]. We recommend use of the appropriate charger only.

Attention: alkaline batteries cannot be recharged.

Keypad lock

Hold [7] button down for longer than 3 seconds: the display will show to confirm activation. PTT [11], MON [10] and [9] will still be active. Repeat the same procedure to unlock the keypad.

Hands-free transmission mode (VOX) / Baby-sitter

ALAN 441 has built-in VOX capability (automatic transmission) settable in 3 positions.

This feature is particularly useful to keep a check of the baby at a distance as you can automatically listen to all sounds or noises close to the transmitter (Baby-sitter).

VOX Activation

Hold the [8] button down for longer than 2 secs.

"VOX" will appear on the display to confirm the function is enabled.

Speak into the microphone [5]: transmission will start automatically.

VOX sensitivity setting

  2. Hold the [9] button down while turning the radio on. The display [3] shows:

  3. Select the desired VOX level (L1, L2, L3) by means of the / [6] buttons. The VOX sensitivity is now adjusted.
    VOX can be adjusted in 3 positions:
    • L1: high sensitivity (normal voice with no background noise);
    • L2: medium sensitivity (for slightly noisier areas);
    • L3: low sensitivity (useful in very noisy areas or if you talk loudly).
  4. Press [7] to confirm.

VOX delay adjustment

This option keeps the radio in transmit mode after you stop talking. This delay can be adjusted (if it is set too short it may cause transmission to stop between some words) and allows you to speak at a steady rate with no loss of transmission.

To enable this feature, press once the [8] button.

On the display:

Use again the / [6] keys to select the desired delay:

  • d1: short delay
  • d2: medium delay
