Foreword

This manual provides information for the ADVAC®
38 kV medium voltage circuit breakers as described
below. All information in this manual was current at
the time of printing. The ADVAC 38 kV circuit
breakers have a front panel width of 780 mm (30.7
inches) and come in two configurations — draw-out
floor-rolling and fixed mounted. Applicable
standards are NEMA, IEEE, NEC and ANSI C37.04,
C37.06, C37.09 and C37.20.2 with UL listing
available. The normal operating temperature range
is from -25 °C (-13 °F) to 40 °C (104 °F). Elevation
should be less than 3300 feet above sea level
(at higher elevations, a de-rating factor will be
applied per ANSI standard).
Similarly to all the apparatus ABB manufactures,
the ADVAC 38 kV circuit breakers are designed
for different installation configurations. They can,
therefore, undergo further technical construction
modifications (at the customer's request) so as to
adapt them to special installation requirements.
Consequently, this manual may not contain
instructions concerning special customized
configurations. This means that, besides this
manual, it is always necessary to consult the latest
technical documentation (circuit and wiring
diagrams, layouts, assembly and installation
drawings, any protection coordination studies,
etc.), especially regarding any variants requested
in relation to the standard configurations.
Use only original spare parts for maintenance
operations. Please also consult the circuit breaker
technical catalog and the spare parts catalog for
further details.

and use this manual as a guide during installation
and initial operation.
File these instructions with other instruction
books, drawings and descriptive data of the
switchgear. Keep this manual available for
installation, operation and maintenance of this
equipment. Use of these instructions will facilitate
proper maintenance of the equipment and prolong
its useful life.
Scope of instructions
The instructions are general in nature. They cover
requirements for installation, setup, checkout and
maintenance as applied to all ratings of ABB ADVAC
38 kV circuit breakers. These instructions do not
attempt to cover all variations and combinations
of equipment and installations. Other helpful
reference information to keep on hand may include:
• Bills of materials that list electrical devices
and equipment
• Single line drawings showing power connections
• Elementary and schematic diagrams
• Connection diagrams
