Install the Latch Release Lever Tensioner
Spring
Installation
1. Install the latch release lever tensioner spring
(A, Figure 30) to the center latch assembly (B)
by routing a 3/8 X 1-1/2" bolt (C), and a 3/8 SAE
washer (D) through the spring, a 3/8 jam nut (E)
the center latch assembly and secure using a 3/8
nylon lock nut (F).
2. Install the latch release lever tensioner spring to
the right support plate (G) by routing a 3/8 X 2-1/4
bolt (I), and a 3/8 SAE washer through the spring,
a 3/8 serrated flange nut (H) the right support plate
and loosely installing a 3/8 serrated flange nut.
3. Pull the hardware mounting the spring to the right
support plate toward the back of the machine until
the coil-to-coil length of the spring measures 2"
±1/4 (5,1 cm ±.64). Once the measurement is
achieved, tighten the 3/8 serrated flange nut to
lock the spring in place.
Inspection
The length of the latch release lever tensioner spring
determines how much force is necessary when
squeezing the lever to release the latch.
1. Squeeze the latch to see if the tension on the
handle is comfortable for the operator.
Adjustment
The latch release lever tensioner spring should never
be adjusted so short that driving over uneven terrain
can free the latch.
1. Loosen the serrated flange nut.
2. Pull the hardware mounting the spring to the right
support plate forward to decrease the amount of
force necessary to release the latch, or backwards
to increase the amount of force necessary.
3. Once the desired amount of force to operate
the latch release lever is achieved, retighten the
serrated flange nut.
