  • Page 16 The control panel provides direct control of the printer. Use the control panel for many tasks, such as setting the printer to offline before opening the cover. The control panel features a 32-character liquid crystal display, nine keys, and three status lights. The nine keys are divided into two sets: three operating keys for normal operation of the printer and six selection keys for entering menus to change the printer settings.

  • Page 21 Note: If you want to load your own roll of media, see “Loading a Roll of Media” later in this chapter. 1. Open the printer as described earlier in this chapter in “Opening the Printer.” 2. Remove the media from the media envelope. Lay it out flat, with the labels facing up.
  • Page 22 4. Feed one end of the media into the opening at the back of the printer. Continue feeding media until several inches extend out the front of the printer. 5. Adjust the edge guides so that the media does not shift as the label prints.
  • Page 23 The following procedures explain how to load roll media into the printer. The 4400 printer supports both direct thermal or thermal transfer media. The 4400 printer accepts both fanfold and roll media. If you are planning to use roll media, you need to install the media roll holder.

  • Page 35 There is also a reference section for network installations. You can connect your 4400 printer to a PC, a local area network, an AS/400 (or other midrange computer), or a mainframe. This section provides the information necessary for connecting to any of these systems.

Contact your Intermec representative for ordering assistance if you do not have the appropriate cables. To connect the 4400 to your PC serial port, you need a shielded EIA RS-232, RS-422, or RS-485 electrical interface with a 25-pin D-style subminiature connector.

  • Page 39 NugFont C o d e 39 HelvC If you did not have the parallel interface installed at the factory, an Intermec technician can install the field-installable option (Intermec Part No. 069227) in the optional I/O board port of your printer.
  • Page 40 Once you have the printer connected to your system, you need to verify that the printer communicates with your system. The easiest way to test communications is to enable the Data Line Print command in the Service menu. You have two selections for Data Line Print: The printer prints all ASCII characters it receives from the host, including control characters.

  • Page 53 C o d e 39 HelvC You can adjust the print darkness when the printer is online or offline. Use the dark adjust setting for fine-tuning only. Once you set the sensitivity rating, a darkness setting of zero should provide optimal print quality. However, as the printhead wears or if you use a lot of media, some adjustment may be necessary.
  • Page 54 Clean your printer regularly to maintain the quality of your labels and extend the life of your printer. The following table contains suggestions for cleaning the printer. To clean the printer effectively and safely use the following items: isopropyl alcohol, a cleaning brush, cotton swabs, and a clean lint-free cloth.
  • Page 55 The following procedures tell you how to access and clean the printer components without causing any damage. Note: Turn off and unplug the printer before cleaning any components. The following procedures include instructions for opening the printer without power. To open the printer without power, you must remove the ribbon access door.
  • Page 56 4400G.023 Clean the case with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol as necessary to remove dust from cooling vents. If the vents become obstructed, the printer may overheat, which can result in pauses while printing labels and damage to the electronic circuitry inside the printer.
