New types of viruses are invented all the time. Be
sure to get regular updates of your virus-scanning
software from the program manufacturer.
If a software program or the operating system
gets damaged, you can reinstall the software to
the hard disk drive. Refer to "Using Application
Recovery and System Recovery" on page 79
for details.
When your PC has software problems, it's
possible that a voltage spike, power outage, or
brownout has occurred. Symptoms of voltage
spikes include a flickering video display,
unexpected computer startups, and the computer
not responding to your commands. A voltage
spike can occasionally corrupt or destroy files,
so it is a good idea to consistently make backup
copies of your data files. Prevent voltage spikes
by installing a surge suppressor made for use
with computers between the power outlet and
the computer power cord.

Making Recovery CDs

In the unlikely event that there is damage to the
hard disk drive or you have to replace it, you
must use recovery CDs to reinstall the operating
system and software. Make the recovery CDs
for your PC by using HP Recovery CD Creator
now, before a need occurs; refer to "Using
HP Recovery CD Creator" on page 83. This
program assembles the necessary files and
writes the information onto CDs.
