Following this "Troubleshooting Data" section is a page illustrating typical pilot flame problems.
Use this as a guide in conjunction with the following information when troubleshooting pilot light problems.
PROBLEMS
1. Pilot will not light.
2. Pilot light will not stay lit when pilot
control valve is released.
3. Pilot light will not stay lit when main
burner and blower are operating.
4. Heater blowing cold air with pilot
light out.
XI. TROUBLESHOOTING DATA
FOR STANDING-PILOT HEATERS
CAUSES
* Propane gas tank empty.
* Single-stage regulator supplied with
heater not used accordingly.
* Gas supply valve closed.
* Pilot control valve not fully depressed.
* Restriction in gas hose.
* Pilot light orifice plugged.
* Air in gas line.
* Excess flow valve in P.O.L. stem
closed.
* Gas control valve defective.
* Restriction in gas hose.
* Insufficient time allowed for pilot light
to warm up thermocouple.
* Loose thermocouple.
* Defective thermocouple.
* Pilot light frame dirty.
* Pilot light orifice partially plugged.
* Defective pilot control valve.
* Improper gas pressure.
* Pilot light orifice partially plugged.
* Gap between pilot shield and burner
may be too wide, allowing pilot flame
to be pulled away from thermocouple.
* Loose thermocouple.
* Weak or defective thermocouple.
* Defective pilot assembly.
* Propane gas tank empty.
* High-limit heat switch open.
* Obstruction in gas hose.
* Freeze up of propane gas tank.
* Pilot light orifice holes plugged.
* Gas supply line too long.
REMEDIES
* Fill propane gas tank.
* Remove improper regulators.
* Open supply valve.
* Be sure pilot control valve is fully
depressed.
* Replace hose.
* Clean or replace pilot light orifice.
* Depress pilot button on pilot control valve
to bleed the air from the gas line. Usually
necessary at time of installation.
* Close propane gas tank valve, wait 10
minutes and reopen valve slowly.
* Replace gas control valve.
* Replace hose.
* Hold in pilot button 30 - 60 seconds to
allow thermocouple to heat up properly.
* Tighten thermocouple.
* Replace thermocouple.
* Clean pilot light frame. Pilot flame
should envelop end of thermocouple.
* Clean or replace pilot light orifice.
* Replace pilot control valve.
* Set pressure according to nameplate
on heater.
* Replace pilot orifice.
* Pilot shield should not have gap between
shield and burner. Replace shield.
* Tighten thermocouple connection.
* Replace thermocouple.
* Replace pilot assembly.
* Fill propane gas tank.
* See Problem Number 6.
* Clean the gas hose, using compressed air.
* Use larger propane gas tank. Keep tank
full on cold nights.
* Clean or replace pilot orifice.
* Hose longer than 10 feet cannot be used.
