Questions and answers
I have lime deposits and soot on the boiler's heat exchanger. What is your recommended process for removing the lime deposits?
The recommended process for removing lime deposits from the heat exchanger of an A.O. Smith boiler with part number 160M is as follows:
1. Use UN•LIME® deliming solvent as recommended.
2. Fill the heater with UN•LIME® until foaming action stops.
3. Wait 10 to 15 minutes after foaming stops to let UN•LIME® dissolve remaining scale.
4. Open the drain valve and drain all UN•LIME® from the heater.
5. Remove the standpipe and drain hose assembly and reinstall original fittings.
6. Open valve “A” to flush the heater with fresh water through the drain valve for 3 to 5 minutes.
7. Close the drain valve and open valve “B” to resume normal operation.
For heavy lime deposits:
- Use a deliming pump kit (A.O. Smith part no. 4930) or contact a service agency if the solvent does not pass through clogged coils or the heat exchanger.
