CD/DVD data storage formats
Your notebook is delivered with an CD/DVD drive. Depending on the tyep, your notebook is fitted
with a DVD±RW dual drive, with a multi format DVD drive with double layer support or a super-multi-
format DVD±RW DL LF (Double Layer with Label Flash Support) drive.
CD/DVD drives can either only read or both read and write different CDs or DVDs. The meaning of
the respective CD and DVD types is described in the following:
CD-ROM
Abbreviation for C ompact D isc - R ead O nly M emory. A CD-ROM is an optical data storage device
that can contain a maximum of 700 Mbytes. These data cannot be changed.
CD-R
Abbreviation for C ompact D isc R ecordable. A CD-R is an optical data storage device that can only
be written only once with a maximum of 700 Mbytes of data. Then these data cannot be changed,
but can be read as often as desired.
CD-RW
Abbreviation for C ompact D isc R e W riteable. A CD-RW is an optical data storage device that can be
written with a maximum of 700 Mbyte of data a virtually unlimited number of times. This means the
data can be deleted and changed.
DVD (DVD-ROM and DVD video)
Abbreviation for D igital V ersatile D isc or D igital V ideo D isc. A DVD is an optical data storage medium
that can contain a maximum of 17 Gbytes of data. These data cannot be changed.
DVD+R/DVD-R
Abbreviation for D igital V ersatile D isc R ecordable or D igital V ideo D isc R ecordable. A DVD+R or a
DVD-R is an optical data storage device that can only be written once with a maximum of 4.7 Gbytes
of data. Then these data cannot be changed, but can be read as often as desired.
DVD+R and DVD-R are different standards. DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs can only be written by
